A new day, a new drawing, and a new lesson learned. Yes, a lesson, because I am just starting out in drawing, and I do so with the excitement of a child marveling at every stroke that holds mental and emotional significance—in this case, for me.

I must say that before creating any drawing, I watch a few tutorials because I need some guidance. However, after watching them and practicing a bit, I let my instinct take the lead.

For this fourth day of Inktober, the task is to draw a "cactus." The one I created is set in an arid landscape. Below, I present the final piece, followed by a step-by-step look at the process:

Here is my drawing. Regarding my level of satisfaction with the work, I have to say that the "snake" turned out too big, and its tongue looks like a chicken's beak. I could call it a "pecking snake," hahaha.

However, I feel the mountain, the cactus, and the rest turned out well. I always say we must learn to be our own critics. If you were to ask me, "Why didn't you erase the snake and adjust its size?"

The answer is that it was one of the last things I drew, and to make matters worse, I drew it with a ballpoint pen, which made erasing it difficult. Anyway, that’s how it turned out, and I hope it doesn't look too jarring to the eye.

Now, here is my step-by-step process:

The first thing I did was sketch the mountains:

Next, I added some shading so the mountain wouldn't look stiff. I painted the sun and outlined the flat terrain:

Then, I shaded the mountain and the sky, blending it with my fingers:

And once I felt the setting was ready, I drew my cactus; at first, it reminded me of a man raising his arms to show off his muscles:

Finally, I added some lines to the cactus and shaded it as well.
Since it seemed like there was a lot of empty space, I drew my "mega-snake," hahaha:

And in the end, I felt the need to make the cactus a bit taller; since I couldn't trim the snake, I emphasized the mountain, drew some hills on the flat ground, and added spines to the cactus. And this is how my arid landscape turned out:

Sort:

You might feel the snake is disproportionate compared to the rest of the drawing. I don't think it's anything to worry too much about—it's a real "whopper" of a snake, haha. The main thing is that it isn't venomous or a constrictor, or at least that it stays away. I imagine there are some very, very long species in those habitats.

I like the sort of texture I notice on the cactus; it’s probably due to the blending you did with your fingers.

Gracias, amiga. Sí, la serpiente es enorme, jajaja. Gracias por pasar.
