Art Explained by a Writer: Dockworkers at the North Sea Wharf

in ᴀʀᴛ & ᴀʀᴛɪꜱᴛꜱ • yesterday (edited)

Just take a deep breath, come on Jan, are you a man or what? How bad can it be? There’s nothing like being out in the fresh air. The sea is still the sea, the air is crisp, even if it smells more of fish than of the salty sea air.

Arie kept chattering away, determined not to let there be any silence and to prevent Jan’s strange thoughts taking over.

‘How that man has changed,’ thought Joris, who hadn’t been able to follow a single word of Jan’s sniffling story or Arie’s subsequent torrent of words. Arie was a good bloke and had just managed to grab Jan by the collar when he’d tried to jump off the dock to drown himself.

‘You know that life is a gift and that you can always come to me,’ Arie continued, as Jan began to sob harder. Snot was dripping from his nose.

‘He doesn’t look very attractive,’ thought Joris, as he studied his mate’s face, chewing on his cigar stub. Ugh, that tasted awful. He spat on the ground. He’d much rather have chewing tobacco.

Arie gave Jan a hearty slap on the shoulder. ‘Come on, time for a drink! The working day’s over.’
As he stood up, he pulled out his handkerchief and handed it to Jan.
‘You’re coming round for dinner tonight, and there’s a bed for you, nice and warm.’

‘Welcome to Volendam,’ thought Joris, before striking up a song. Singing, the trio arrived at the local pub. The atmosphere there was already lively. There was plenty of singing, drinking and laughter. Everyone was enjoying life to the full.

Jan lay contentedly on the straw mattress with a full stomach. Arie’s wife was warm-hearted and a good cook. What had seemed like a gloomy and hopeless day in the morning had turned into a warm, comforting one. ‘Tomorrow,’ Arie had said, ‘everything will be different and we’ll get down to business.’

Gewoon even diep ademhalen, kom op Jan, ben jij nou een man?

Reading the story (without looking at the picture yet) I imagined young Jan and strong, hard-working, salty men. Looking at the picture, I thought that Jan might have run to get tobacco ...)))

============

Old men, Volendam is a village where many famous Dutch singers came from. I assume they meet in the pub.

I thought you would ask why Jan wanted to jump off the dock 🤔
Welk, he seems to be tucked in, full tummy and sweet dreams are with him.

...why Jan wanted to jump off the dock? :)

I suspect that, after all those years working in the harbour, Jan wanted to know just how deep the water really is – or perhaps whether it is shallower than people say. It may well be that there is less work and fewer boats can come in; perhaps the water level is too low, even though global warming wasn’t yet a factor to blame back then. Of course, it could also be that he simply knows what Arie is like – he’d have a ready-made meal without having to do the washing-up, as he’s without a wife himself. We’ll leave it open for now as to whether he’s ever had a wife or whether she’s passed away, leaving him a complete wreck. Who knows, perhaps he’s simply put up with a leaking roof, or his bed hasn’t been made yet, and he fancies staying with someone else for a while. Of course, it could also be that he didn’t want to jump off the Dock at all and just leaned over to have a look, and that there’s something wrong with Arie and he’s now keeping an eye on him – or at the very least, he’s made Arie feel needed. I just don’t think there’s a cigar or a pinch of snuff involved.

Everyone’s full, with full stomachs) Happy)

  • I’m like that right now, too—lying here (almost) happy with a full stomach. I’m afraid to roll over—I might burst)

What an interesting story!

Did you stuff yourself with all the good food? I hope your belly won't hurt and you can digest it.
Don't roll over, don't fall and above all do not burst (unless it is for laughter).

Thanks for stopping by. You can also write about this painting or pick one of those other two @solperez provided in her contest.

Extraordinary art; the images tell the story clearly.

What images? There is only one image!
Do watch and read at all?
Do you have an idea what this post is about?

Three best friends who support each other through thick and thin—always together, sharing both the good times and the bad, and enjoying meals together.

From the image, we can see that this is a painting of three friends who share both the joys and sorrows of life.
