Art in Arnhem - The Art Market - Sonsbeek Park

Arnhem and the surrounding area have been renowned for generations for their many artists and creative talents. The capital of Gelderland is home not only to the art academy, but also to a conservatoire, a dance and film academy, and a fashion academy. I’ll leave it open as to whether these courses are any good or not, and whether the average graduate ever finds a job or makes a name for themselves.

The positive thing about this is that the city organises a great deal in the arts. The summer months are packed with events, ranging from living statues, fashion shows, theatre and film evenings on the roof of the new Focus Theatre to art performances and art markets in the public parks. This ensures that art and creativity are accessible to everyone (buying them is another matter).

At the market held in Sonsbeek Park on the last weekend of September, there were only people selling products they’d made themselves. And yes, that goes for cheese, clothes, bags and… chips too (so peeling the potatoes and cutting them into strips yourself).

At first I felt a bit disappointed, because I saw some things I’d already seen last year. This time it seemed a bit smaller. Unfortunately, the maker of the little guitars made from cigar boxes wasn’t there.

Fortunately, there were some newcomers. I had some lovely conversations with these artists, particularly about the urge to create something.
It’s striking that many of them have multiple talents. The best thing of all is that their faces light up when they’re asked to talk about their art.

Personally, I think the embroidery – which looks more like a collage and is a mixture of different stitches – is beautiful. Incidentally, it doesn’t involve a single cross-stitch.
This lady isn’t from Arnhem or the surrounding area, but from the north of the country. She could easily have been on display at Museum Arnhem.

Rico was the only one sitting there drawing, completely absorbed in his work. He looked up, distracted and startled, when I spoke to him. He draws using a crown pen and Indian ink or a fineliner. He doesn’t have any business cards, but … you can buy his drawings. Either the original or a print. The latter is a lot cheaper. There are undoubtedly hours of work that go into each illustration. I think his work is wonderful.

The paintings in the last photo are by an artist who has just graduated (’just graduated’ actually sounds a bit odd…). ‘This is my first exhibition,’ she says shyly. As an introvert, she finds it difficult to promote herself. She gratefully takes on board the advice from visitors.
