Enjoying 'Mie Abu Spesial' for the First Time
Noodles are a culinary staple favored by the vast majority of people in Aceh. I, too, am a huge fan of these noodles, which can easily be found in every corner of the region. Among the hundreds of places serving this signature dish is Mie Abu Spesial in Lhokseumawe City. It is a modest establishment, occupying a two-story shophouse on Jalan Gudang, in the Pusong area of Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe.

Although I frequently pass by, I had never actually stopped to enjoy the food at Mie Abu. Driven by curiosity, I decided to visit this past Sunday afternoon, shortly after the midday (Dhuhr) prayer. It was a bright day, and when I arrived, the shop distinctive for its orange color was not particularly crowded. A few customers were waiting for their orders, while others were already enjoying their meals. I found a comfortable seat and waited for my order to be served.

Bang Abu is preparing an order of noodles
Usually, when I pass by, Mie Abu is packed with customers eager to savor the delicious Acehnese-style noodles. The shop is located near the Lhokseumawe City Market. Like many other places that serve Acehnese noodles, the owner, Bang Abu, prepares the dishes himself. He is meticulous about maintaining the quality and flavor of his noodles, using a special blend of spices. The menu offers a wide variety, ranging from standard noodle dishes to versions topped with shrimp, meat, tuna/mackerel, or even oysters.
Mie Abu also serves other types of noodles, such as bihun (rice vermicelli) and kwetiau (flat rice noodles), as well as instant noodles, all at standard, accessible prices. There is no need to question the seasoning; the unique blend of spices makes these Acehnese noodles a hit with everyone. The distinct flavor profile comes from a combination of spices such as pepper, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, and chili reflecting a fusion of Indian, Chinese, and local cultural influences. It is not surprising that the majority of people in Aceh are generally very fond of noodles.

The noodles and drinks I ordered
A standard portion of Mie Aceh at Abu’s noodle stall is priced at IDR 10,000, or the equivalent of 10.49 Steem. This is quite affordable, especially considering how delicious the food is. Customers can also add various toppings such as shrimp, meat, tuna, or oysters for an additional cost. Like many other noodle spots, Abu’s stall offers three styles of Mie Aceh: goreng (stir-fried/dry), tumis (sautéed with a little gravy), and kuah (served in a rich, soupy broth).
This afternoon, I ordered a portion of tumis-style Mie Aceh with shrimp. The flavor was spot on and well worth the price of IDR 25,000 (approximately 26.23 Steem). For a drink, I ordered an iced tea for IDR 7,000 (about 7.34 Steem). As it happened, a friend was already there waiting for their order, so I settled the bill for both of us a total of IDR 42,000, or 44.07 Steem. The service at Abu’s stall is efficient and prompt, so I didn’t have to wait long. It also helped that it wasn’t very crowded this afternoon, which meant my order was ready in no time.
