The emergency beacons cast a sickly red wash over three rusted bronze figures dangling from the ceiling like butchered meat. Centuries of toxic green patina choked their armor, yet thick umbilical tubes jammed straight into their spines pulsed with fresh, arterial blood and raw, screaming voltage.

"Bronze Corps," Lu Yan hissed, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register as she whipped out a rune-carved nail gun. "Zhao didn't just send mercs; he sent fully silicified executioners. Their human minds are long wiped—replaced clean with Pan-Asia military firmware."

Before her warning could even settle, the center figure twitched. A sickening shriek of tearing metal and stretching sinew split the corridor. With a deafening crash, the lead soldier dropped sheer, landing in a bone-jarring, three-point crouch dead in front of us.

The impact vibrated violently up through the black book fused directly into my sternum. Beneath my pale skin, the red optical fibers flared like live electrical wire, flooding my veins with a synthetic surge of adrenaline that tasted sickeningly of battery acid and raw copper.

"Subject locked. Initiating non-lethal extraction," a synthetic, multi-tonal grind rattled from the grille of the bronze helmet—sounding like three distinct voices trapped and suffocating inside a metal pipe.

It lunged. It moved with a terrifying, inhuman velocity, a blur of oxidized plating and high-pressure hydraulic shrieks.

"Get back!" Lu Yan roared, hammering the trigger of her nail gun.

A storm of silver, Daoist-inscribed iron spikes slammed into the soldier's breastplate. Sparks exploded in a blinding halo, the sheer kinetic force staggering the giant half a step back. But it didn't even flinch. The heavy carapace simply swallowed the energy, and with a sweeping arc of a massive, clawed gauntlet, it batted Lu Yan aside like a ragdoll. She slammed hard against the concrete, skidding down with a choked groan as her nail gun clattered across the deck.

"Lu Yan!" Old Chen shrieked, clutching my shoulder in blind panic. "Kid, do something with that thing in your chest! They’re going to rip your heart right out for the core!"

I had no choice. The second and third bronze figures dropped from the ceiling, choking off our only escape path. The corridor was too narrow to evade, and my physical frame was already buckling under the grinding weight of the background data overwrite.

As the lead executioner raised a jagged, blade-like forearm to pin me against the bulkhead, a searing, white-hot agony erupted behind my ribs. Grandpa’s warning from the digital purgatory flashed hard across my mind: “Do not trust Lu Yan.”

If I’m going to die in the dirt here, let’s see what this parasite inside me can actually break.

Instead of dodging, I threw myself forward, plunging my bare hand straight into the high-voltage fluid line protruding from the monster's spine.

BZZZZT!

Pain beyond comprehension tore up my arm, but the data conduit flipped. Instead of the system scrubbing my mind, my nervous system—supercharged by Hell's Eye—vomited a torrent of screaming, corrupted code straight back into its firmware.

The giant froze mid-strike. Its glowing red optical visor flickered violently, flared a blinding, toxic violet, and died into absolute blackness. The remaining two soldiers locked up instantly, caught mid-motion in a system-wide freeze frame.

I yanked my smoking hand free, sucking in ragged breaths. My chest burned like an open furnace as the sync rate crept upward: 1.45%... 1.50%...

Lu Yan staggered back to her feet, wiping a smear of dark blood from her temple, staring at me with a lethal mix of awe and naked terror. "You... you didn't just hack a terminal. You overrode military-grade hardware bare-handed."

"Move," I gasped, hauling Old Chen past the paralyzed statues. "The bulkhead's up ahead."

We slammed into the dead end of the corridor—a massive, rusted steel blast door stamped with a faded biohazard emblem. No keypads. No card slots. Just a deep, precision-carved circular socket right in the center of the metal, shaped to the exact, sickening geometry of Hell's Eye.

"It's a biometric gate," Lu Yan breathed, her fingertips tracing the rim. "It needs the core. It needs you to plug in."

I looked back down the suffocating dark of the corridor. Far in the distance, the heavy, rhythmic thud of fresh hydraulic boots began to hammer against the concrete. They were coming. Dozens of them.

Slowly, I raised a trembling hand to my chest, feeling the glowing red fibers writhing frantically beneath my skin, starving to feed.

Kudos—it has been a long time since I read a decent piece of fiction. You masterfully handle the atmosphere, the characters, and the narrative pacing. You truly have something solid to show here. I am quite familiar with the genre, and your imagery is brilliantly executed—the kind that allows the reader to mentally recreate the scenes you narrate with fluidity and precision. Another highlight is your creative ability. Fiction acts as a creative bridge between the magical and the wondrous; it is often difficult to keep the reader engaged—if they cannot grasp the narrative world—whether fantastic or surreal—they tend to walk away.
You, however, manage to take the reader by the hand and build—brick by brick, frame by frame—this humanized puzzle. One can truly feel the dense world inhabited by these characters: the skin, the bones, the exoskeletons, and the very act of breathing as a painful labor.
I encourage you to keep creating. As long as life allows, I will follow your writing. Welcome to CCC, the community of living art. Although I am arriving a bit late, I know that @wakeupkitty—a person of exquisite taste and literary talent—always leaves me signs, a trail of breadcrumbs leading to fine art and great literature.

Dear @almaguer, please forgive my delayed response! I somehow missed the notification for this beautifully written comment, and the community founder kindly pointed me back here.

Reading your words is deeply moving. To know that the gritty, painful cyberpunk world I’m building—the rust, the bone, the suffocating atmosphere—translates so vividly in your mind is the highest compliment a writer can receive. You perfectly captured the core of Hell's Eye: the painful labor of staying human in a mechanical age.

I learned from the community that you took time out of your very limited daily electricity window to read my chapter and leave this thoughtful feedback. That humbles me tremendously. Thank you for walking into this dark world with me. I will definitely keep creating, and it is an absolute honor to have you reading along. Welcome to the journey! 🦾✨

Late or not, you arrived and the good thing is: there a way more episodes. I am happy to know you like it and left such a good comment.

Say hello to the pelicans, the fish in the bowl smells like rotten eggs.

I have electricity for an hour and a half, leaving me in a strange rationing situation where I make little headway. I need and want to do so many things at once during this allotted time. The list would be endless and tedious.
Yes, it is an excellent novel. Talent deserves praise.

How do you know about how long it will last? I assume you have a to-do-list with priorities. I will not keep you talking.

That’s the average time they always state—a constant that has been well-studied in Cuba. No, you have to bear with me; I’m juggling a few things at once while I write to you.

1.5 hours to charge, do the laundry, overload the system. I assume the fridge is no longer used. You are our foreland. The datacenter need all the energy there is.
Now drones check on us and bill us in the bigger cities. Like someone wrote: it will not take too long till tiny drones sneak into your house to check on you and shoot you.
Which reminds me of a film and story and the cyberpunk stories of @eagithao. I wonder if it is still cyberpunk, fantasy or if it is reality.

You hit the nail on the head! It’s terrifying how fast the line between cyberpunk fiction and our current reality is blurring. With data centers consuming massive power and surveillance drones becoming so common, it feels like we are already living in the prequel to this dystopian world. Thank you so much for reading so deeply into Chapter 9 and sharing such a thought-provoking perspective! 🦾

I’ve been counting pelicans again. The air is thick and dirty. I take refuge in the thought of these clandestine migrants of feathers and sun. The bank has started printing 10,000- and 20,000-unit banknotes without backing. Massive hyperinflation is looming—worse than Venezuela’s.

¿De qué sirve imprimir si nadie puede utilizarlo? Me recuerda a una noticia que leí sobre EE. UU.: pueden imprimir dinero, pero no cohetes...

Esos inmigrantes clandestinos tienen suerte.

What's the point in printing if no one can use it? Sounds like the news I read about the US: they can print money just no rockets...

Those clandestine migrants are lucky.

Oh dear, this is definitely one of the best pieces from your series so far, where you’ve managed to pack in plenty of suspense in almost every paragraph. I think the three soldiers are brilliantly described, and it’s good to hear a word from old Chen before we forget he exists. It seems the lady doesn’t really know what this book is capable of.
In any case, you’ve done an excellent job of ratcheting up the tension, and I could practically feel that punch right here!
All that action did make the setting seem a bit less important, though.
You’ve done a brilliant job of describing the three mercenaries, trapped against their will and without any agency of their own. I felt a bit of pity for the leader of the trio. Hanging there, useless, stripped of everything, in a filthy, damp, stuffy building for years on end, only to meet your end like that.
I’m curious to know what Zhao thinks of that, but he’ll probably be standing at a distance, beaming at the successful project.

I’ve really enjoyed reading your story.

cc @almaguer if you ever have electricity + wifi again read this.

Thank you so much! Calling it one of the best chapters so far is a massive compliment, and it gives me a huge motivation boost!

I'm truly touched by your empathy for the mercenary leader. You completely understood the tragedy of the cyberpunk world I wanted to convey: under the cold metal and high tech, even the "villains" are just pawns stripped of their agency and humanity. They were victims of the system long before they met Yun Feng.

As for Boss Zhao... you have great intuition. He is definitely watching from the shadows, evaluating his "project."

And a special thank you for tagging @almaguer! It means the world to me that you are recommending my story to others. I hope they enjoy it when they get their connection back! I'm heading over to your blog now to check out those amazing paintings you mentioned earlier! 🎨🔥

For sure @almaguer will like your story. He ollives on Cuba, is a professor Maths, a great story writer plus a painter. He is able to work and fix computers plus phones.

He will surely stop by when he is able to.

Boss Zhao os a bit creepy but also one to pity, that is he might years ago, just not today and not in that world.

People like @almaguer find the solution.

This BOOMING vote is yours and well deserved!
❤️🍀

Thank you so much for the generous BOOMING vote and for diving deep into the story! ❤️🍀

You completely nailed it with Boss Zhao! He is definitely a tragic product of this dystopian world—whatever humanity or pity he deserved was swallowed up by the harsh reality a long time ago. I'm thrilled that his character left an impression on you.

And I would be absolutely honored if @almaguer stopped by! A math professor who writes stories, paints, and fixes computers? That sounds like an amazing cyberpunk character in real life! 😆 I really look forward to connecting with him.

Thank you again for the wonderful support and for bringing great people together!

This BOOMING vote is yours and well deserved!

Thank you so much for the generous BOOMING vote! Your continuous support means a lot to me. ❤️🚀

Unhappy to hear that. Again I am behind reading you

No need to apologize at all, @wakeupkitty.pal! The best part of building this cyberpunk world is that the archives will always wait patiently for you.

Please take all the time you need and read at your own pace. I'm just deeply honored that you are experiencing the story of Hell's Eye amidst your busy schedule managing the community!
