Good things cannot remove sins...
They say, "Two wrongs do not make a right ", this is true.
I know people that will do something wrong and instead of making peace, apologize and right their wrongs. They simply do not want to swallow their pride to do apologize, instead they try to do nice things or buy something to appease for the wrong they've done. They prefer spending than simply saying sorry.
If you ask me, I will say they are just trying to bribe their way out of the situation.
They think they are meeting a need or doing something good, but the sin is still there. The sin has not been removed, infact they added more to it.
Doing good things should not be your option for removing sins, or righting wrong. You should apologize and seek for peace, you can meet a need afterwards if you want, but the apology and forgiveness is very important.
I had something else in mind, but how you described it, I can only agree.
