300 Characters About a Book: Het huishouden van Grietje van Steen

I listen to an audiobook about Grietje van Royen, daughter of a painter married to Jan van Steen. It’s ok, not a historical novel. It features 17th-century artists, the 80 yrs’ war, tulips, the plague, typhus, hell and the tugboat. Babies drink beer. Striking is women are the bookkeepers and models.

Wow, what a wild time period.
The mix of art, war, and everyday life in the 17th century is fascinating.

The most shocking thing to me was that babies drank beer 😂

One couldn't drink water. They took it out of the canals and also emptied their toilets, trash, dead animals in it.
It is the reason why beer was invented. Imagine everyone drunk...and still living the golden age, building a country, a republic and fighting Spain for nearly 80 years while there's the Plague, pest a witch hunt and church spreads even more fear. .

Do babies drink beer?? Surely this must have had terrible consequences for the child's fragile body? Does the book say anything about this? Probably , this inevitably led to addiction to alcohol ... How difficult and dangerous human life has been and still is throughout the history of mankind.
Currently, it is difficult for us to imagine that water can be so polluted, environmentalists are constantly sounding the alarm if pollution standards of discharged waters from various events are violated somewhere. And they are often violated.

Completely preventing pollution is an almost utopian task, like a dream of catching a rainbow with a net.(Ilya Rybalchenko)| Полностью предотвратить загрязнение окружающей среды — почти утопическая задача, как мечта поймать радугу сачком.(Илья Рыбальченко)

I am glad that in Russia the federal target program "Clean Water" was launched back in 2006, it was extended (tightened at the same time) until 2030.

I don’t know what people drank in your country in the 16th century – so from 1500 onwards? Everyone drank it: cold beer, lukewarm or warm. There was a lighter variety – I suspect with less yeast – to which a splash of boiled water was still added, and then there was strong beer, apparently for feasting or perhaps because the alcohol content was higher. In the Middle Ages, it was quite normal to drink beer instead of water; water made people ill. As far as I understand, that is why beer was invented in the first place. Wine existed too, but that was definitely for the rich and not for the common folk. Waste was dumped into the canals and rivers by animals, and you couldn’t really use that to make a nice cup of tea.
I suspect that everyone was drunk to some extent – perhaps, given the lower alcohol content, they still managed to function more or less normally? I don’t get the impression that people were all staggering around the streets heavily drunk, or that there was significantly more brain damage than there is today. Let alone livers ruined by excessive drinking.

All in all, it’s astonishing just how resilient humans are, managing to survive so many scourges whilst waging constant war, suffering from hunger, burdened by huge debts and, consequently, the associated stress. Who knows, perhaps that beer with breakfast might actually do young and old alike a world of good. Although tolerance will certainly set in as well.

Meanwhile, our drinking water is now very heavily polluted, even though it is treated and people claim it is still one of the best types of drinking water in Europe or even worldwide; we drink straight from the tap, but… The water treatment companies say it is becoming increasingly difficult to filter out all the medicines people take from the water. So the fact is that with every glass of water we probably also ingest contraceptives, and hopefully also antidepressants and so on. This strikes me as far from healthy and will certainly cause harm, even though we are all pretending as if nothing is wrong. We’ll probably only find out in 50 or 70 years’ time just how much damage has been done, because by then another generation – or several – will have passed away and won’t be around to complain about it.

That explains so much.
So beer wasn't just for fun, it was literally safer than water.
It's crazy to think they built a republic and had a golden age in the middle of plague, war, and all that fear.
History is wild. I can't even imagine

No, beer was instead of water, or tea or coffee or soda or hot chocolate (mainly for the rich).

They really suffered.
I can't imagine living like that either. It makes you appreciate what we have now.
It's heartbreaking and inspiring all at once.

Each generation had its war and plagues and struggles. We can learn from history that no matter what human kind is creative and finds a way to survive.

So true. Struggle after struggle, but we always adapt and find a way. That’s what makes us human.
