A Lonely Farewell in a Foreign Land: A Harsh Reality

Only those living abroad can truly grasp the profound uncertainty and loneliness that lie hidden beneath the veneer of life in a foreign land. After spending an entire week confined at home, unable to work, my heart feels incredibly heavy. This stagnation stems from a tragic accident at the workplace. A fellow Bangladeshi expatriate, working on the same project, met with an accident on-site and lost his life instantly. The sudden death of a colleague cast a pall of grief over the entire project, leading to the temporary suspension of all work.

It is heart-wrenching for someone to depart in this manner—far from their family and loved ones, with no relatives present to mourn beside their lifeless body. This cruel event stirs a common fear among all expatriates: that a similar fate might one day befall any of them, leaving their own remains to rest forever in a distant, foreign land. Expatriates spend their entire lives striving to provide a better existence for their families, yet, by a cruel twist of fate, they often find themselves without a single loved one by their side when they draw their final breath.

Danger or death never arrives with a warning. No one can foresee what destiny has in store. Trusting in the will of the Creator, one must accept that a person’s journey will inevitably end exactly where it was ordained to end—a fate that no amount of human effort can avert. Praying for the peace and eternal rest of the soul of that departed colleague is the only solace now. As I prepare to return to work after this long, difficult week, one realization stands out clearly: the life of an expatriate is, in essence, a silent story of relentless toil and solitary struggle.
