A Day Without the Scroll
I decided to spend one full day with my phone in airplane mode. No notifications, no scrolling, no quick "just checking" glances. The first few hours were oddly uncomfortable — I kept reaching for my pocket out of pure muscle memory, as if searching for something that wasn't actually missing from my life.
By early afternoon, something shifted. Tasks I'd been putting off for weeks suddenly felt manageable. My attention span, which I'd assumed was just "bad" these days, came back in surprising bursts. What struck me most wasn't the productivity boost — it was how quickly and quietly I'd adapted to constant low-grade distraction without ever noticing the trade-off I was making. We don't consciously choose to be scattered; the habit builds itself one notification at a time. One offline day won't fix that permanently, but it was a useful reminder of how much mental bandwidth gets consumed by default, without our consent.
