Hotel RAM Thieves Caught After Stripping Memory from Guest Room Computers

Two men in China have been arrested for stealing RAM modules from computers installed in hotel rooms. Instead of taking entire computers, the suspects opened the system units, removed the memory modules, and later sold them on the second-hand market.

According to investigators, the scheme was organized by a man surnamed Li. While staying at a hotel, he discovered that he could easily access the computer in his room, removed two RAM modules, and realized the theft could be repeated elsewhere. He later recruited an accomplice, surnamed Cheng, and together they targeted additional hotels.

Between May 15 and May 31, the pair stole a total of 16 RAM modules from hotel computers. By selling the stolen components through second-hand marketplaces, they earned approximately $2,000.

Their scheme quickly fell apart because the affected computers could no longer boot without memory installed. Hotel staff noticed the repeated hardware failures and reported the incidents to the police. After an investigation, authorities identified and arrested both suspects.

The case demonstrates that even relatively simple hardware theft schemes can be exposed quickly when the stolen components leave obvious signs of tampering and render the equipment unusable.
