The Book of Wisdom is a book of the Old Testament attributed to King Solomon. Through the teachings contained in this sapiential book, the author made it clear that the nation of Israel, in particular, was in ancient times the custodian of God's eternal wisdom. This book probably influenced many of the early Christians, and its spiritual legacy through the centuries is undeniable.
The Book begins by teaching the nature of wisdom, and how wise and foolish men oppose each other and perceive life in a different way, and how, by the order of things, blessing comes to the sensible men, but ruin to foolish men. The book then continues with an exhortation to seek wisdom, especially for powerful men, because kings and rulers are judged more severely by God. And then the author of the book continues with a beautiful praise of wisdom.
Solomon was undeniably a doctor of wisdom, that is, a person empowered by God to teach the highest science. In fact, Solomon received the gift of wisdom at Gibeon to teach his people the most perfect science. Solomon was essentially a doctor of doctors, because just as there is a hierarchy among the sciences, — wisdom is, according to metaphysics, the most perfect science — there is also a hierarchy among doctors. It is for all these reasons that Solomon, in his praise of wisdom, taught that God is the one who grants true knowledge of this science with these words: "Therefore, I prayed, and understanding was given to me; I pleaded, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me" Wisdom 7:7.
But then the wise man taught something else: wisdom is the most valuable good for man, and he expressed this spiritual truth with these words: "Neither did I reckon any precious stone to be her equal, because, compared with her, all gold is but a few grains of sand, and beside her, silver is accounted as clay" Wisdom 7:9. Wisdom is the immaterial good that is the origin of all other material goods for man; wisdom is the origin of prosperity and abundance, happiness, and longevity in man, and this is what Solomon taught in his praise.
Solomon made it clear that whoever understands these truths in their heart is truly a person enlightened and guided by God. He who is devoted to wisdom and loves it sincerely earns the friendship of God and his spiritual likeness, the wise man concluded in his praise. And there is no greater spiritual knowledge than this, concluded Solomon, the doctor of wisdom.
