The Number of the Beast and the Tale of the Maiden

Nur immer ‚The Number‘?

Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

The Number of the Beast and the Tale of the Maiden

‘Hey, lads, what are we actually doing for Halloween this year?’ asked Ben, glancing over from his bar stool towards the loiterers’ corner, where Bill was being snogged by Heidi on the old, grubby sofa, whilst Evelyn – aka ‘Evil Eve’ – Bert, Joschi and Flo were slumped bored in their armchairs, smoking a bit of weed and decorating their matted hair with cobwebs from the corner that was never tidied up.

‘As always, we’ll be listening to Black Sabbath over and over again!’ replied Evil Eve, giving Heidi – who was lying on top of Bill – a slap on the bum. Heidi had only heard ‘over’ and rolled over to one side in shock; everyone laughed, some a little later, Bill last.

Ben trudged over to the others, dragged an empty beer crate over, sat down on it and said: ‘I’ve got a better idea – let’s do something really wild: let’s listen to “The Number of the Beast”, 666 times, without a break.’ – What do you mean, nothing else? Just ‘The Number’ over and over? – Yeah, I’m sure it’ll be a blast if we repeat it exactly 666 times. – You’re not planning on drinking blood whilst we’re at it, are you? – We’ll see, grinned Ben.

Flo looked rather concerned. 666 times? How long’s that going to take, Big Ben? Have you lost your clockwork, Big Ben? – Laughter, nods of agreement. – Calm down, fireman, calm down. The song is barely five minutes long, so we’ll be fine in 3,330 minutes – that’s – Ben had to think for a moment – not even 60 hours, so we can do it from Friday evening to Monday morning.

Won’t that be terribly annoying? – We could alternate with live versions and stuff, suggested Bert, who was clearly starting to warm to the idea. “We could also light 666 candles or something.” – “Rubbish! Are you mad? You’ll burn the place down!” – “Come on, they don’t all have to burn at the same time – maybe just 66 at a time.” – “No way. If we’re going to do it, then all of them, and we’ll just use tea lights – what’s the worst that could happen? Just don’t put them right under the old curtain again!”

That last remark was aimed mainly at Joschi. He just shrugged. ‘The curtain’s got to go anyway; we’ve had the skull blinds for ages now,’ he growled. By that he meant the roller blinds with the grinning skulls, which they’d put up in the windows the year before last for Halloween and hadn’t taken down since.

On Friday evening, 30 October, everyone was there and had brought a few people along with them. The room was thoroughly decorated with grimaces and little monsters, the lighting switched to an icy blue so that even faces with a normal skin tone would look quite spooky, and from around 10 pm the big event began: The Number of the Beast as a marathon, the ominous number from the Apocalypse as the event. The quote hung on a banner made of scraps of paper above the bar: ‘Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.’

Finally, Wolf turned up and dragged something very large over. ‘Here, this completes the decor!’ With these words, he plonked a large plastic bundle onto the floor. Ben, Joschi and Bill unwrapped it, stared at it in disbelief and then burst out laughing. It was a poster from one of the nearby villages, and it read: ‘666 Years of Thorn Bug’. They hammered a few nails into the wall and hung it up. It fell down. They kept trying, and lo and behold, on the sixth attempt it finally stayed up.

Meanwhile, Evil Eve and Heidi had set up and lit the candles. They were the red lights from the cemetery – or at least looked just like them – and six were placed in each corner. Ben had thought of using ketchup and raspberry syrup to make the drinks and food look somewhat bloody.

‘The Number of the Beast’ was playing for the third time when one of the nameless guests asked: ‘Is it always the same track playing here? Is there something wrong with the CD player?’ Ben and Joschi shot him a withering look. Then Bill asked: ‘Who’s actually keeping count?’ Two or three of them giggled, and Ben replied smugly: ‘Nobody. It’s all strictly calculated.’

Shortly after twelve, someone shouted from a corner: ‘Happy Halloween!’ – ‘Shut up, you daft oaf! It’s only the 31st today!’ – ‘Is the 31st of October actually anything special? After all, it’s a public holiday.’ – ‘Where, then?’ – ‘Well, here in Saxony-Anhalt, and in a few other federal states too, you dimwit!’ – Oh, there was something – I think that’s when the Reformation was proclaimed. – Blimey, you’re a proper hero – the Reformation wasn’t proclaimed at all! – How else? – A monk published a pamphlet against the Pope, and that’s what led to the Reformation! – A pamphlet? What on earth is that supposed to be? – Nonsense, who’s talking rubbish here? They were theological theses, and they were supposedly nailed to a church door, in Cologne or somewhere. – No way! You lot haven’t got a clue! It was Martin Luther, in Wittenberg!

Things went back and forth and got all mixed up like that for a while, and nobody took any notice of the fact that the thirty-sixth repetition – 6 times 6, as we all hopefully know – of the Number of the Beast was playing, and that at that very moment a strikingly dressed figure was sneaking past outside, grinning scornfully up at the skull-shaped windows and clenching a fist in the pocket of his long red coat. Underneath, he was wearing a golden suit. This was none other than Tom, one of Bill’s twin brothers – or rather, one of the triplets – namely the one nobody could stand and who, once again, hadn’t been invited.

Will it continue soon? A gripping story, a blasphemous issue, marijuana, and young people...definitely a somewhat frightening combination! 📝 🎃 🦇

I anticipate the continuation...
Very captivating

Seek and you shall find. Personally, I'm very interested in finding out what the final outcome will be of that brilliant idea this group of people has come up with.
