Sunrise

The morning crept in,
as if it had something to make amends for.
Very quietly, it pushed its pale light
across rooftops and barren trees,
reaching out for things
that had long since passed.

At the horizon, the night tore open
in a narrow streak of gold.
A promise, one might have hoped.
A new beginning.
Another chapter.

And yet — nothing began.

The birds stayed silent,
as if had not received the news.
The dew lay heavy upon the grass
like the tears of a farewell
that no one had ever spoken.

And somewhere beyond the railway tracks,
something was sinking
that would never return.
No crash, no thunder, no final words...
Only that quiet, relentless certainty
that some things come to an end
long before one understands the loss.

The sun climbed higher.
It did what it always does.
Relentlessly beautiful,
shamelessly indifferent.

And while the world welcomed its light,
a place remained in the shadows,
where only yesterday, the future had been.

Deutsche Version:

Sonnenaufgang

Der Morgen kam geschlichen,
als hätte er etwas wiedergutzumachen.
Ganz leise schob er sein fahles Licht
über Dächer und kahle Bäume,
tastete nach Dingen,
die längst vergangen waren.

Am Horizont zerriß die Nacht
in einem schmalen Streifen Gold.
Ein Versprechen, hoffte man vielleicht.
Ein Neubeginn.
Ein weiteres Kapitel.

Doch - nichts begann.

Die Vögel schwiegen,
als hätten sie die Nachricht nicht erhalten.
Der Tau lag schwer auf den Gräsern
wie die Tränen eines Abschieds,
den niemand ausgesprochen hatte.

Und irgendwo hinter den Gleisen
versank etwas,
das niemals wiederkehren würde.
Kein Knall, kein Donner, kein letztes Wort...
Nur dieses stille, unerbittliche Wissen,
daß manche Dinge enden,
lange bevor man ihren Verlust begreift.

Most sunrise poems reach for an easy metaphor about hope and renewal. This one does the opposite.

That line, "something was sinking that had never arrived," captures the exact weight of watching an ordinary morning break over an empty routine. Morning arrives on schedule whether anything changes or not. The quiet refusal to force an optimistic resolution gives the piece its actual gravity.

Writing like this deserves a quiet reading room, far away from reward calculations and contest tags.

That's one point. Another one: writing should come straight from the heart, not because one was asked to...

(that some things come to an end long before one understands the loss.) Exactly, we don't fully understand it. Losing someone at a young age leaves a scar. Maybe it runs deeper than other losses, or maybe it's just experienced differently depending on the circumstances. Either way, it's something we must face.
