Marvel's Wolverine is out and the critics and the players don't agree at all

in #gaming3 days ago

Marvel's Wolverine came out on PS5 yesterday, September 15. It's made by Insomniac, the studio that did the Spider-Man games, so a lot of people were expecting big things.

Then the reviews came in and it got strange.

The critic scores are all over the place. It's at about 77 on Metacritic and 81 on OpenCritic. Those are decent numbers, but they're well below what Insomniac usually gets. Both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 sit at 88. Game Informer gave Wolverine an 8.5 out of 10. Giant Bomb gave it a 2.5 out of 5. Same game, and that's a massive gap.

The complaints line up pretty well across reviews. The story is predictable, the pacing drags, and the combat gets repetitive after a while. So does the praise. People say the fighting feels good, it looks great, and it's about 15 hours long instead of stretching to 60.

Players, on the other hand, seem to love it. It's at 4.83 out of 5 on the PlayStation Store, and over 92% of the reviews are five stars.

I think both of those can be right at the same time. If you play a dozen superhero games a year for work, a game that's good but not amazing is going to blend into the pile. If you just want to be Wolverine and slice stuff up over a weekend, that's exactly what you get.

I'm probably going to buy it. A 15-hour game that doesn't overstay its welcome sounds good to me right now.
