Walnut processing at home
Today, I tried to show you how walnuts are processed here in our area.
We do have a decent amount of walnut production here, but over the years, people have shifted their focus more towards apple cultivation, so walnuts are not as common as they used to be.
When it comes to walnut processing, the first step is harvesting the walnuts from the trees. This requires skilled people because walnut trees can grow extremely tall, and bringing the walnuts down is a very difficult and risky job. Every year, there are many accidents where people fall from these trees, and unfortunately, some of them lose their lives while others suffer serious injuries. It is genuinely a very challenging task.
Once the walnuts are harvested, they are kept aside for some time until the outer green husk naturally starts separating from the walnuts. After that, the husk has to be removed manually. This is where things get a little messy because the dark stain from the husk sticks to your hands. It can be quite difficult to remove, and even when gloves are used, the colour can still find its way onto your hands to some extent.
After removing the husk, the walnuts need to be washed properly. I have also shown that process in the video.
During washing, some people use soap or detergent, while others use sand. Sand increases the friction between the walnuts, which helps remove the dirt and residue from their surface. Some people also use detergent to make the walnuts look cleaner and more presentable from the outside.
After washing, the walnuts are spread out in an open area to dry naturally. And during this stage, someone has to keep an eye on them because of the crows. If you leave the walnuts unattended for the whole day, you might come back in the evening and find almost none left!
That’s how mischievous these crows can be.
So, in this video, you’ll get a glimpse of how walnuts—the nuts that almost everyone loves—are traditionally processed here, from harvesting to washing and drying.
