Ganesh idols for ganeshchaturti festival

Tomorrow marks Vinayagar Chaturthi, the festival celebrating the birth of the Hindu deity Vinayagar. People purchase idols of the deity according to their means and install them in their homes for periods ranging from three to nine days to perform rituals; subsequently, the idols are immersed in water bodies such as rivers, ponds, lakes, or the sea. While these idols were traditionally crafted from clay and sand, many are now made using chemicals like Plaster of Paris. Although visually appealing, immersing them in water causes pollution. Such idols are currently sold widely on the streets during the Vinayagar Chaturthi season. In the following week, large idols are also installed in public spaces for worship. While the festival is celebrated across India, it is observed with particular grandeur in the cities of Maharashtra, with the celebrations being especially renowned in Mumbai and Pune.
