I live in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a busy city where people are constantly moving. I cross an area called Gulistan twice every weekday, so I regularly experience the problems of this area. This place is considered a central point of Dhaka, connecting people to many parts of the city. It is surrounded by commercial and business areas, banks, retail hardware markets, and several major bus stands. Roads from here connect to Motijheel, Old Dhaka, the Bangladesh Secretariat, and different highways. This makes Gulistan an important transportation hub, but the heavy traffic and other problems also waste our time and make daily life more difficult. They may seem like normal parts of city life, but they waste our time, affect our health and comfort, and make everyday life much more difficult.

This place (Gulistan) poses many problems, among them the two issues I notice most are heavy traffic congestion and poor waste management. One of the biggest problems in this community is heavy traffic congestion. Almost every day, people spend a huge amount of time stuck on the road. Sometimes, a journey that should take only a short time can take more than an hour. Students may arrive late for classes, and sometimes they even miss important exams like the SSC or HSC exams. Office workers can reach their workplaces late, while others may miss important appointments. Being stuck in traffic for a long time is frustrating, tiring, and stressful. The noise and smoke from so many vehicles make the situation even worse. During the rainy season, the problem becomes worst. Roads become heavily congested, and walking is also difficult because many footpaths are occupied by street hawkers, leaving pedestrians with little space to move.

Another problem is poor waste management. In places like Gulistan, garbage is often thrown beside roads, drains, and open spaces instead of being properly collected. There is also a busy grocery market which naturally produce a lot of waste every day. Unfortunately, the waste dumping area is located right beside the road, making the surroundings dirty and creating a bad smell, which causes a serious problem on health isuue.

I think the traffic problem in my community is caused by several things happening at the same time. One major reason is the large number of vehicles using the same limited roads. Private cars, buses, CNGs, rickshaws, motorcycles, and other vehicles often compete for the same space. In places like Gulistan, the situation becomes worse because buses stop wherever they find passengers, vehicles are parked on the roadside, and street hawkers occupy parts of the road and footpaths. Poor traffic discipline is also a big reason, as many drivers do not follow traffic rules properly. During rainy days, waterlogging and damaged roads make the situation even worse. I believe the problem is not caused by one particular group; it is the result of poor traffic management, limited road space, unplanned activities, and a lack of discipline from both drivers and pedestrians.

Several efforts have already been made to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka. Traffic police are regularly deployed at busy points, traffic signals have been introduced, roads and intersections have been improved, and public transportation and mass transit projects have been developed. However, from what I see in my daily life, these efforts are not always enough, especially in crowded areas like Gulistan.

In my opinion, we need to focus more on proper traffic management and enforcement. Buses should stop only at designated stops, roadside parking should be strictly controlled, and traffic rules should be followed by everyone. Footpaths should be kept clear so that pedestrians do not have to walk on the main roads. Better coordination between traffic police, city authorities, transport operators, and local businesses could also help. I also think improving public transportation is important because if people have a reliable and comfortable way to travel, fewer of them may feel the need to use private vehicles. These changes may not solve the problem overnight, but they could make a real difference if they are properly maintained and followed.

I don't think these problems can be solved by the government alone; we, as members of the community, also have a responsibility. We can follow traffic rules, avoid unnecessary use of private vehicles, stop illegal parking, and be more patient and disciplined on the roads. Shopkeepers and street hawkers should also keep roads and footpaths clear so that pedestrians can move safely. At the same time, something as simple as putting our garbage in the proper place instead of throwing it on the street can make a real difference. Schools, universities, businesses, and local organisations can arrange awareness programmes, community cleaning activities, and encourage people to recycle and take better care of their surroundings.

The government should strictly enforce traffic rules, control illegal parking, manage bus stops properly, ensure regular waste collection, and make public transportation more convenient. Traffic police and city authorities also need to work together regularly instead of taking action only when the situation becomes serious. If everyone takes a little responsibility instead of blaming others, I believe we can gradually make Dhaka cleaner, safer, and more comfortable for everyone.

I believe a better Dhaka is possible, but it will not happen through one big solution. It will come from many small changes made by the government, organisations and ordinary people together. If each of us starts thinking that the roads and public spaces belong to all of us, not to someone else, Dhaka can gradually become a cleaner & safer city.
