Cockroaches in Your Holiday Accommodation: What Kind of Compensation Can You Expect?

You book a holiday suite at a campsite or holiday park, unpack the bags, put the kids to bed… and then somebody shouts: “WHAT IS THAT RUNNING ACROSS THE FLOOR?”

Cockroaches are definitely not part of the all-inclusive package.

But what kind of reimbursement can you realistically expect if you discover cockroaches in a holiday home, mobile home, bungalow, or camping suite?

One Cockroach or an Infestation?

This distinction matters. Finding one insect does not automatically mean you are entitled to a full refund. Especially in warm climates, an occasional insect can enter through an open door or window.

Finding several cockroaches, particularly inside bedrooms, kitchens, cupboards, or bathrooms, is much more serious. Small cockroaches can also suggest that there is an established population nearby rather than one adventurous visitor.

Take photos or videos and report the problem to reception immediately. This gives the accommodation provider a chance to solve the problem.

What Compensation Is Reasonable?

The first solution will normally be practical rather than financial. The campsite might offer another bungalow, arrange additional cleaning or pest control, or move you to different accommodation.

If they cannot provide acceptable alternative accommodation, asking for a partial or full refund becomes much more reasonable.

There isn't a magical rule saying, “Four cockroaches = 40% refund.” The appropriate amount depends on how badly the problem affected your stay.

If you stayed for several nights but experienced a serious problem during one night, reimbursement for that night could be a reasonable starting point. If the accommodation remained unsuitable and you had to leave, you have a much stronger argument for reimbursement of the unused nights.

Don't Just Pack Up and Disappear

Report the cockroaches, document everything, and give management an opportunity to respond. Keep emails, messages, photographs and booking information.

And if reception tells you that cockroaches are simply “normal”?

Well… birds are normal too. You still wouldn't expect six of them living behind the refrigerator.

A holiday suite should be reasonably clean, hygienic and suitable for guests — preferably without roommates with six legs.
