🇮🇹

Let’s be clear: the moment Salvini—at the League’s party congress—declared his friendship for Bolsonaro Jr. and the outgoing president of Serbia, the fate of those two politicians was sealed.
Jokes aside, Lula’s victory was monumental.

As for the electoral fraud Bolsonaro complains about, it was actually his own doing—specifically in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil’s fourth-largest city, which has a pro-Bolsonaro mayor.
Four hundred public buses were kept in their depots instead of transporting people from the outskirts to the polling stations—people who would have voted for Lula. This is why, in some states, the polls remained open for an extra two hours.
Then again, as Trump has shown us, whenever these figures lose, it’s always someone else’s fault.

Lula’s victory is wonderful news for Cuba, for all of South America, for the planet, and for those who still believe that another world is possible.
Admittedly, if we have to pin our hopes on an eighty-year-old to prevent the right wing from seizing power everywhere, then some serious reflection is in order—though perhaps not today.
In Brazil, there are Cuban medical brigades—an initiative championed by Lula—which returned after Bolsonaro Sr. had dismissed the previous ones, promising jobs to those who stayed behind—a promise that, in most cases, was never kept.
Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba—perhaps there is still some hope left in the world.

Lula won by a margin of 4.5 million votes; in a country as vast as Brazil, that is a significant figure, even if it represents less than 4% of the total. That said, in instances where the right has won elsewhere in Latin America, the margins of victory were roughly similar.
In short, we are looking at a continent split down the middle—with one half voting for the left and the other for the right. Lula’s victory—following a first round in which Bolsonaro had been in the lead—came as a surprise. For one thing, people who had stayed home during the first round turned out to vote, which proved significant. Furthermore, the votes that had gone to other centrist or center-right candidates—votes widely expected to shift toward Bolsonaro—did not materialize as predicted; in the end, people voted for whomever they pleased, largely unconstrained by strict political allegiances.

This also comes as a blow to Trump, who is—predictably—claiming fraud; he will likely do the same after the drubbing he is set to receive in the midterm elections just a few days from now. Argentina also heads to the polls next year; it is high time that the madman the Argentines elected last time around is sent off to a specialized institution. As for the elections in Serbia, it is a good thing that the students won—the outgoing government was a pack of corrupt individuals—though I would like to understand exactly who is behind that student movement; I remember all too well what transpired during the "Arab Spring" revolutions.

Meanwhile, Machado has returned to Venezuela...
