If an election were held in Germany tomorrow, the AfD would likely be the party with the most votes.
It is already the leading force in the eastern states, as recent regional elections have shown.
To the AfD’s tally, one must add the votes for the "red-brown" (left-nationalist) movement led by Sahra Wagenknecht—who broke away from Die Linke—which is polling above 5% and could potentially enable the AfD to come to power in those regions.

Following 10 years of Nazism and 40 years of Communism, there have been 35 years of so-called democracy since reunification—a process that might be more accurately described as an annexation.
If, after enduring two regimes—the first of which was definitively totalitarian—the people of East Germany have decided they have had enough of this "pseudo-democracy" and are shifting their support toward parties that have little in common with democracy as we understand it, then perhaps things have not gone quite as they should have.

It must be noted that the eastern states have always maintained a strong connection to Russia—a bond that did not vanish even after the end of the GDR. The fact that they now have to pay three times as much for gas—simply because Merz refuses to purchase it from Russia—was the final straw.
We—or rather, you—were all happy when the Berlin Wall fell, and perhaps many East Germans were, too.

But then they realized that the promised development never materialized, that wages remained significantly lower than in the West, and that—in a sense—things were better when they were "worse." Consequently, they have decided it is time to start talking to "Uncle Vladimir" again. Before something similar happens here too, wouldn't it be better for Italy to re-examine its relations with Russia—relations which, historically, have always been more than good, even back in the days of the USSR?
