"Traveling is pointless.
If you have nothing inside, you will never find anything outside.
It's useless to search the world for what you can't find within yourself."
TIZIANO TERZANI "Another Ride on the Carousel"

I borrowed this quote from Terzani in his most bitter but also most lighthearted book, when he already knew it wouldn't last long.
I think it's perfect for a certain way of experiencing the island by a certain type of tourism, obviously with a particular focus on Italian tourism.
It's all too common to read posts full of hatred towards the island, its government, and even its residents.

Posts from Italians who have been hurt by Cuba.
Sometimes I look at the profiles of these compatriots of ours, to try to understand the reason for so much hatred. I realize that up to a certain point, Cuba was practically everywhere on their pages, then it disappears.
The reasons for the failure of a life project can be many; there's no point in listing them, given their multiplicity.
There are those who thought it was love, but it was actually a carriage. Those who brought their supposed love to Italy with disastrous results because they thought it was meat for the living, but it was actually a mongrel.
Perhaps for the meat for the living, the mongrel was the one who invited her.

Those who invested money in houses, fincas, cars, motorcycles, televisions, refrigerators, solar panels, etc.
Those who supported the girl in Cuba, along with her father, stepfather, mother, the perpetually ill abuela requiring extremely expensive, unobtainable medicines, the first, the sobrino, the abuelo, and finally... the "acting officer."
Then things don't go as planned, and Cuba becomes guilty of every misdeed, confusing personal failures with what the island could have done but didn't.

My best Italian friends are almost all separated from Italian ex-wives, often from the girl next door they met as children—economic bloodbaths I won't even bother recounting.
No one dreams of blaming Italy for a failed marriage, a business that didn't take off, a house that had to be left behind.
In Cuba, nothing is forgiven.
You then have to consider how much those expenses have impacted the daily lives of those who made them, because if you invested 5% or 10% of what you have... screw you...that's how it went, you turn the page and never talk about it again.
But if you've invested, through negligence, all or almost all of what you had and it all goes to waste, then things get complicated.

But is it Cuba's fault or the fault of someone who was...let's say careless?
Here we return to Terzani's quote: if you look outside for what you don't have inside, failure is just around the corner.
If you go to Cuba without ever leaving the village, without even a modicum of experience, including love and romance, it's clear that the first person to sit on your lap will become Cleopatra, to whom everything is owed.

Cuba is a merry-go-round; if it's worth it, you must have no regrets. It went as it was meant to go, for those who believe in it, as the Orishas wanted it to.

Living with grudges damages the stomach and unloads bile where it shouldn't be unloaded, often with tragic consequences.
