Hello everyone,
after five rounds, the Serie A table is already offering a few surprises.
Roma, Inter and Lazio are tied at the top with 13 points. Cagliari are just one point behind them on 12, while Milan have reached 11. Frosinone, Juventus and Como are all sitting on 10.
It is still far too early to call this a title race. Five matches are not enough to define an entire season, but they are enough to show which teams have started with confidence and which ones still have important questions to answer.
That is what makes this opening phase so interesting: nobody has managed to break away.
Roma and Inter produce the weekend’s biggest match
The most anticipated game of the round was Roma against Inter, and the first half appeared to belong completely to the home side.
Manu Koné scored twice before the break, giving Roma a 2-0 lead and putting Inter under serious pressure.
The match changed after half-time.
Lautaro Martínez reduced the deficit shortly after the restart and then scored again in the 79th minute. Inter had been two goals down, but suddenly the game was level. The visitors even came close to finding a late winner.
The final 2-2 draw leaves both teams unbeaten.
Roma may feel that two points slipped away after such a strong first half. Inter, on the other hand, can look at the match as another difficult evening from which they managed to escape with something.
That resilience is already becoming one of the early characteristics of Cristian Chivu’s Inter.
Lazio and Cagliari refuse to slow down
Lazio did exactly what a team near the top needs to do: they won away from home.
The Rome club beat Venezia 2-0, with Mattia Zaccagni scoring from the penalty spot before Tijjani Noslin added the second goal.
The result kept Lazio level with Roma and Inter at the top of the table.
The defensive numbers are also encouraging. Lazio have conceded only three goals in five matches, a record that explains why they have been able to remain in the leading group.
Cagliari are perhaps an even bigger surprise.
Their 1-0 victory away to Udinese was not spectacular, but it was another example of a team that knows how to manage difficult matches. Daniel Maldini scored after an unfortunate defensive mistake, and Cagliari left Udine with another important three points.
Four wins in five games and only two goals conceded are no longer statistics that can be dismissed as a lucky start.
Cagliari are beginning to look like a serious early-season story.
Napoli are already under pressure
Napoli’s 1-1 draw against Fiorentina produced a very different feeling.
Billy Gilmour put Napoli ahead, but Álex Jiménez equalised for Fiorentina. The result leaves Napoli with seven points after five matches.
That number is not disastrous, and it would be unfair to judge an entire season after only five rounds. However, the comparison with Napoli’s start last year is uncomfortable: the club had collected 12 points at the same stage.
There was also discussion after the match about Massimiliano Allegri’s reaction in the dressing room. Reports suggested that the coach was unhappy with the attitude shown in Florence and aware that the squad had not received all the reinforcements he had hoped for.
Those reports should be treated cautiously unless confirmed directly by the club or the coach.
The next few weeks will tell us much more than one difficult result.
Milan and Juventus return to winning ways
Milan enjoyed one of the clearest victories of the weekend.
The Rossoneri defeated Lecce 3-0 at San Siro, with Christian Pulisic, Adrien Rabiot and Diego Moreira on the scoresheet.
The result lifted Milan to 11 points and kept them close to the three teams at the top. Moreira’s goal also continued his promising run of form.
Juventus responded in a similar way, beating Atalanta 2-0. Francisco Conceição and Gleison Bremer scored the goals that gave the Bianconeri an important victory.
The match was also marked by controversy away from the football itself. During the minute of silence held in memory of Sandro Mazzola, a group of Juventus supporters turned their backs on the pitch.
The Juventus club publicly distanced itself from the behaviour, while the Sporting Judge later imposed a €10,000 fine. The sanction was reduced because of the club’s prompt response and the reaction of the rest of the stadium.
It was an unfortunate episode during a weekend in which Serie A paid tribute to one of Italian football’s most important figures.
Frosinone add another surprise
Frosinone are now one of the most unexpected stories of the opening month.
The newly promoted team defeated Como 2-0 and handed Cesc Fàbregas’ side its first league defeat of the season.
Giacomo Calò and Giorgi Kvernadze scored, while goalkeeper Lorenzo Palmisani produced several important saves.
Frosinone now have 10 points from five matches. Before the season began, very few people would have predicted that the promoted side would be level with Juventus and Como after five rounds.
At the other end of the table, Bologna are still waiting for their first victory. Genoa have only one point, while Venezia remain without a point.
Five matches are not enough to declare a crisis, but they are enough to show which teams have started with problems that will eventually need to be solved.
The international break now gives coaches time to breathe, analyse the opening month and prepare for the next phase.
Nobody is running away at the top.

È ancora troppo presto per parlare di una vera corsa scudetto. Cinque partite non bastano per definire una stagione, ma sono sufficienti per capire quali squadre hanno iniziato con maggiore fiducia e quali devono ancora risolvere problemi importanti.
Ed è proprio questo a rendere interessante l’avvio del campionato: nessuno è riuscito a scappare.
Roma e Inter regalano la sfida più intensa
La partita più attesa del turno era Roma-Inter e, almeno nel primo tempo, sembrava che il controllo fosse tutto della squadra di casa.
Manu Koné ha segnato due volte prima dell’intervallo, portando la Roma sul 2-0 e mettendo l’Inter in seria difficoltà.
Dopo la pausa, però, la partita è cambiata.

Pará, ¿viste que Manu Koné le metió dos goles en la primera mitad y dejó a Inter como paja? Kóre, esa defensa de la Lazio, sólo tres goles en cinco partidos, ¡re sólido! Te juro que la tabla está de la puta madre.

Sí, los goles de Koné —especialmente el primero— enviaron un mensaje contundente al Inter; sin embargo, el equipo no se dejó desmoralizar y respondió con un doblete de Lautaro. En este caso también, ambos goles de Lautaro —particularmente el primero— marcaron la diferencia desde el punto de vista técnico.
En cuanto a la defensa de la Lazio, ha sido excelente hasta ahora; al igual que la de la Roma, solo ha encajado tres goles en cinco partidos de liga. No obstante, no olvidemos que, tras la quinta jornada, la mejor defensa sigue siendo —sorprendentemente— la del Cagliari, que solo ha recibido dos goles.
Además, cabe añadir que en este último partido la Lazio marcó la diferencia gracias a las extraordinarias intervenciones de Mandas.
