Bitcoin vs. U.S. Treasuries: the new battle?

(Rif.)
E qui entra in ballo Bitcoin.
Certo, Il Treasury offre rendimento.

Hi everyone, friends from Italy and Steemit!
Bitcoin Has a New Rival: U.S. Treasuries!
I know, it sounds strange because when we think about Bitcoin's "rivals," we usually think of gold, banks, traditional currencies, or maybe other cryptocurrencies.
But we rarely talk about U.S. Treasuries.
The thing is, long-term U.S. government bonds have just gone through one of the worst decades in the last 223 years.
Anyone who bought a long-term Treasury about 10 years ago, when yields were very low, ended up with an average loss of around 2% per year.
Back in 2016, interest rates were extremely low, but at some point inflation arrived.
So the Federal Reserve started raising interest rates, and newly issued government bonds began offering much more attractive yields.
Today, the 10-year Treasury yields around 4.8%, while the 30-year Treasury yields around 5.25%. (Ref.)
And this is where Bitcoin comes into the picture.
It is clear that investors are asking themselves why they should buy Bitcoin, which pays no interest and can easily lose 20% in a few months, when they can instead get around 5% from a U.S. Treasury.
Fair question.
But it is also true that the United States now has more than $40 trillion in debt.
And it is precisely this enormous amount of debt, together with inflation and the need to keep financing it, that brings Bitcoin back into the conversation as a possible long-term alternative.
Of course, Treasuries offer yield.
But Bitcoin offers scarcity.
And in the long run, the programmed scarcity of 21 million Bitcoin could potentially become more valuable than the return offered by a debt-based monetary system.
Then again, in my opinion, you can always have a bit of everything in your portfolio - Bitcoin, Treasuries, Gold - and you can't really go wrong! 🤷
