Photography and information: turtles
This type of post is dedicated to sharing information about the subjects I photograph during my day-to-day life.
Photography
A few days ago, I spotted a turtle in my garden and took some photos of it. It was a truly unusual event. We later realized that a neighbor's turtle had gone missing, and this was the very same one.
Information
Turtle origins
Turtles have incredibly ancient origins. Some sources state that the earliest ancestors linked to their evolutionary lineage date back over 200 million years, to the Triassic period. This means they were already present on Earth during the age of the dinosaurs.
Habitats
Turtles are found in many parts of the world, with the exception of the coldest regions. The greatest variety of species is found in tropical and subtropical zones, where the warm climate suits these reptiles.
Lifespan
One of the defining characteristics of turtles is their slow metabolism. As a result, some turtles—especially large land tortoises—can live for over 100 years and, in exceptional cases, approach or even exceed 150 years of age.
Diet
As soon as I spotted this turtle, I wondered what it might eat. Many land tortoises are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses, leaves, flowers, and other plant matter.
Their importance
Turtles play various roles in ecosystems. Some land species contribute to seed dispersal by eating fruits and plants. Sea turtles can help maintain the balance of seagrass meadows or control certain animal populations, such as jellyfish. Furthermore, their eggs and young serve as a food source for numerous other animals.
The Shell
And what is the purpose of that remarkable shell? The shell serves primarily as protection against predator attacks, but the most surprising thing is that it is not merely a piece of armor resting on the body. It is an integral part of the skeleton: the vertebrae and ribs are connected to the shell's structure.
Conclusion
Turtles are much more than just animals known for their slowness and longevity. Their presence on Earth for over 200 million years bears witness to an extraordinary capacity for adaptation and survival.
Question
Do you own any turtles? Do you like turtles?

I posti dove vivono
E quel guscio meraviglioso a cosa serve?
Domanda
Possedete delle tartarughe? Vi sono simpatiche le tartarughe?
