It's just a part of life here in Krabi that dogs are going to get dropped off at temples. I don't know how it started, but Buddhism dictates that all life is precious, and that if you can't look after something than I guess the monks will do it for you. The monks don't have very much, but I suppose it is part of their duty to look after the creatures that other people cannot look after.
Unfortunately, over time this turned into people simply not wanting the responsibility and they turned this over to the monks. You are supposed to financially support the temple for the remainder of the dog's life when you do something like this but I seriously doubt that many people actually fulfill their end of the bargain.
The monks take this duty on though, and I think a lot of them actually enjoy the tasks.
Don't expect super-luxury treatment from a monk though, they do not have the resources. I think that this puppy is just fine though and I am quite certain that the monk here was being extremely gentle while giving a bath to this little guy.
We provide them with as many products as we can to help them out including food, medicine, and soap for washing if they want it.
This little guy and a sibling were dumped in the middle of the night at a Krabi temple, and it has been a bit disappointing how frequently this has been happening this year. We sometimes feel like we ware making real headway as far as sterilization is concerned in the province, but in the past few weeks we have had a bit of a rush on new additions at the temple.
These ones were in particularly bad shape though. They were malnourished and one of them had rather severe infestation of parasites. Nothing that a little bit of our edible medicine and some TLC can't help with though!
Some monks do it out of a sense of temple duty, but this particular monk seems to genuinely be an animal lover and this works out wonderfully for us and the dogs at the temple.
he and a few of the other monks here look after a bunch of dogs and cats all day every day. All of the animals are "outside animals" but that is ok. If they were on the street they would be struggling for food and in danger of getting run over by cars and motorbikes.
One thing that is kind of interesting about the temples is that the cats and dogs have always been around one another, so there is no fear or fighting going on between the two groups. We are all products of our environment I guess and for these cats and dogs, they have always been on the same team even though they are different species. This is nice to see.
Our primary concern in these situations is sterilization of course and as soon as these 2 new additions are old enough they will be taken to get the snip as well.
If you are in a position to help wherever you live I highly suggest that getting an animal sterilized would be a very good idea. The suffering of stray animals all over the world is largely preventable, but only if we all work together. It costs a lot less than you think and in a lot of countries, this service will be provided for free!
