Main reasons for their appearance near homes

Abundance of food: Human settlements are abundant with rats, lizards, insects, and food found in garbage. Mongooses easily reach backyards or gardens in search of prey.

Safe shelter: Old, abandoned houses, piles of bricks or stones, dense bushes, and drain banks provide safe places for them to hide and build their burrows.

Adaptability: Mongooses are very intelligent and cunning creatures. They have learned to adapt to human presence, allowing them to live comfortably near human settlements without any major threat.

Role in the human environment and ecology

Natural pesticide: Mongooses control harmful rats, poisonous snakes, and insects living near our homes by eating them. Thus, they help protect crops and homes without the use of any chemicals.

Protection from snakes: In Indian mythology and rural life, mongooses are considered enemies of snakes. Their presence significantly reduces the threat of venomous snakes in the surrounding areas.

Conservation and Precautions

Although these creatures are harmless and do not attack humans without provocation, their natural habitats are shrinking due to deforestation and urbanization. Instead of harming them, we should accept them as an important and useful part of our ecosystem.
