🖼️Flowers of Wales | Looking Closer
Flowers of Wales | Looking Closer
My photographic journey through Wales continues.
Castles, ancient walls and vast landscapes have naturally attracted my camera during this journey. But travelling is also about noticing the smaller things we find along the way.
And flowers are something I photograph quite often.
I like their colours, their shapes, their details and the endless possibilities they offer when light becomes part of the composition.
This time, somewhere in Wales, it was this flower that made me stop.
📷 A different scale of the Welsh landscape.
Looking Closer
There is something fascinating about photographing flowers.
We can walk past them without paying much attention, but the moment we look through a camera, an entirely different world can appear.
In this photograph, I was particularly interested in the vertical structure of the plant.
The vivid flowers at the top immediately attract the eye, but following the stem downwards reveals a completely different combination of lines, curves and delicate textures.
The plant almost seems to change as we move through the image.
When Light Becomes Part of the Photograph
Light plays an important role here.
Coming through and around the plant, it creates small points of brightness and reflections against the darker vegetation in the background.
Some are sharp.
Others almost disappear into the scene.
Together with the shallow depth of field, they help separate the flower from its surroundings and give the photograph an atmosphere that I particularly like.
The strong pink and purple tones then provide the final contrast against the greens and warmer light behind them.
Another Side of Wales
During this photographic journey, I have shared imposing castles, medieval stone walls, solitary trees and wide rural landscapes.
But Wales was also made of details like this.
A flower beside the path.
A particular light.
Something small enough to be overlooked.
I photograph flowers quite often, wherever I find them, because they remind me that photography does not always require a spectacular landscape or an extraordinary monument.
Sometimes we simply need to look closer.
And perhaps that is one of the reasons I enjoy photography so much.
It constantly gives me reasons to stop and look.

Hi Marco, the name of your post attracted my attention because the first time we arrived to UK it was Wales, Pembrokeshire and in place called Haverfortwest, I was working in a small rural hospital called Withybush Hospital for 2 years time. The county is beautiful, especially Tenby with its colourful houses on the coast, I remember that when we arrived our first week in August that was warm and felt like in southern Europe.
This photo is absolutely awesome, especially purple colour of flowers and the different tones of purple due to yeallow-orange light of sun that while shining through the petals give that effect of different shades of purple. Well done, that is the main role of photographer to see that beauty and make it visible for others :)
What a coincidence🙂 Pembrokeshire was also part of my journey through Wales, so I can completely understand why the title caught your attention. It is a beautiful part of the country, and I actually have several photographs from that area that I have been sharing — and still have more to come.
Two years working there must have given you a very different relationship with Wales from someone simply travelling through it. And yes, I was lucky with the weather too! Perhaps Wales occasionally likes to pretend it is somewhere in southern Europe. 😄
Thank you also for looking so carefully at the photograph. Interestingly, those purple tones and the warm light were not quite like that in the original image — they emerged during the editing process. That is something I really enjoy about photography: the freedom to take what the camera captured and shape the final image according to what we imagined. In this case, I am particularly glad you noticed exactly the effect I was trying to create. 🙂
And I particularly liked your last thought. Perhaps that really is one of the most interesting things about photography: noticing something that others might simply walk past and trying to make them stop and see it too.
Thank you, @stef1. 🙂
I have some photos that we did in Wales too, I would be glad to be able to publish them in your community but also to publish some photos here, so will see you around here.
It would be really interesting to see some of your photos from Wales here on the platform!
I absolutely loved travelling around Wales. I didn’t visit Cardiff or Swansea, as I chose a more rural route, exploring the countryside and following the coast as much as possible.
One of the highlights for me was definitely Snowdonia. I did some hiking there, was lucky enough to have good weather, and absolutely loved the dramatic, imposing landscapes. I was also fascinated by the character and culture of those small, picturesque Welsh places — they have a very special atmosphere.
So yes, I’d be very happy to see Wales through your eyes and your photographs too. See you around here!
Thanks for stopping by :) I really appreciate the support :) Cheers :)
