The Walk to Barafundle Bay | Wales

Sometimes the destination is only part of the experience.

On the way to Barafundle Bay, the landscape already gives plenty of reasons to slow down and look around.

Open fields filled with wild vegetation, the blue sea, cliffs stretching along the coastline and, once again, a Welsh sky full of clouds.

This was one of those views that made the walk itself worth photographing.

Before Reaching the Beach

Barafundle Bay may be the destination, but getting there means crossing a landscape that deserves attention of its own.

The path takes you through open countryside overlooking the coast, where fields and wild vegetation gradually give way to cliffs and sea.

It is a landscape that feels remarkably open.

There are few elements interrupting the view, allowing the eye to travel from the vegetation in the foreground towards the distant coastline.

And with the sea constantly present in the background, you always know where the path is eventually taking you.

People in the Landscape

I usually enjoy photographing landscapes without too many distractions, but sometimes the presence of people adds something important to the composition.

Here, the two walkers almost disappear into the scale of the surrounding landscape.

They are small enough not to become the main subject, but visible enough to give a sense of proportion.

For me, they also reinforce what this photograph represents.

This is not simply a view of the Welsh coast.

It is a landscape being crossed on the way somewhere.

A Very Welsh Combination

Green countryside, wild vegetation, cliffs, blue water and a sky constantly occupied by clouds.

During my journey through Wales, I encountered this combination many times along the coast.

And perhaps that is one of the things I enjoyed most about photographing it.

The landscape rarely seems static.

The clouds move.

The light changes.

The coastline reveals itself gradually as you walk.

And every few metres there seems to be another possible photograph.

Barafundle Bay was waiting further ahead.

But there was no reason to wait until reaching the beach before taking out the camera.
