Under a Restless Welsh Sky

Wales gave me plenty of reasons to keep looking at the horizon.

On this particular day, the coast opened in front of me through fields covered with wild vegetation and flowers, before finally reaching the sea.

It was a sunny day, but the sky refused to remain simply blue.

Large formations of clouds moved above the landscape, constantly changing the light and giving the scene much more character.

Three Layers of a Landscape

What attracted me to this scene was not one particular element, but the way the landscape seemed to organise itself naturally into different layers.

The foreground was filled with grasses, wild vegetation and small yellow flowers.

Beyond it, the land suddenly gave way to the sea.

And above everything was that enormous sky.

Field, water and clouds.

Three very different elements sharing the same landscape.

The coastline in the distance adds another subtle line to the composition, leading the eye towards the horizon and reinforcing the sense of space that I felt when looking at the scene.

When the Sky Changes Everything

I have always found clouds particularly interesting in landscape photography.

A completely blue sky can be beautiful, but clouds introduce something less predictable.

They create shapes, shadows, openings and constantly changing areas of light.

That was particularly noticeable here.

Although it was a bright and sunny day, the large clouds gave the landscape a completely different atmosphere. Some parts of the countryside were illuminated while others remained temporarily under shadow.

A few moments later, the same photograph could probably have looked quite different.

Perhaps that uncertainty is part of what makes photographing landscapes so appealing to me.

Looking Towards the Coast

There was also something very simple that I liked about this place.

Nothing monumental was needed.

No castle.

No famous landmark.

Just an open field, some wild flowers, the coastline and the sea disappearing into the distance.

During a journey, these quieter places can sometimes be as memorable as the places we deliberately planned to visit.

They invite us to stop.

And when I find myself in front of a landscape like this, stopping usually means reaching for the camera.
