🖼️William Marshal | The Knight Beneath Pembroke Castle
William Marshal | The Knight Beneath Pembroke Castle
Continuing my photographic journey through Wales, this time I wanted to capture a different perspective of Pembroke Castle.
At the foot of its imposing medieval walls stands an equestrian statue of William Marshal, a figure whose history is closely connected to the castle itself.
For this photograph, I chose black and white to emphasise the textures, shapes and contrast between the sculpture and the ancient stone walls.

The Knight Behind the Castle
William Marshal was one of the most remarkable knights of medieval England.
Born around 1146, he rose from relatively modest beginnings to become Earl of Pembroke and one of the most influential figures of his time.
His life was closely connected to the English royal court, and his legacy remains visible in the imposing stone fortress overlooking Pembroke.
The equestrian statue, created by sculptor Harriet Addyman and unveiled in May 2022, pays tribute to his historical importance.
Standing beneath the castle walls, it creates a connection between the medieval past and the present-day landscape.
A Different Perspective
What attracted me to this composition was the relationship between the statue and the castle.
The horse and rider dominate the foreground, while the massive stone walls extend across the background.
The black-and-white treatment allows the details of the sculpture, the vegetation and the medieval architecture to stand out without the distraction of colour.
Two elements, separated by centuries, brought together in a single photograph.
