SLC33-W6: My Community, My Story – Challenges in My Community

A wonderful contest is being organized, and now the Sixth week of this contest is underway. It is a nice contest for My Community, My Story. Zinia has organized it; she is @josepha. 01, Introduce your community, name, and location

The first question asked me to state my community's identity and location. Before discussing this unclear place, I was mentioning the name of this community — it’s Bogura city, a district in the traditional North Bengal of Bangladesh. Just as this city has many beautiful and notable places, it also has low-quality areas.

I was going here from Koloni Bazaar, that is, there’s a road inside from Kolomi Bazaar that leads into the Paikar Para area. This is a very wealthy neighborhood, an area of rich people, and I was surprised by the kind of environment I encountered while entering this area.

02 What is the major challenge affecting your community, and how does the problem affect the people in your community?

The main problem in our community is personality. This problem exists in Bangladesh from the administration to ordinary people. The main problem in our area is the drains. There are many dirty places in our neighborhood. The main reason for them is the drains. These drains hold dirty water.

The surprising thing is that even with light rain, water accumulates here. The water rises, and when there is water in the drains, the dirty water comes up. It comes onto the streets, so people walk through this dirty water.

The people here are affected by all these problems. They have foot problems, develop allergies, and get seriously ill. It causes problems for everyone, young and old, including those who go to school or office, as these problems affect them too.

03 Tell us what you think is the cause of the problem that is affecting your community

Administrative management is a problem because the administrative management in Bangladesh is in a very bad state, and we've seen the same situation in the capital, Dhaka. There are places near the roads where garbage can be thrown, and people throw their trash there, while those who are supposed to manage it are very lazy and negligent about this.

For all these reasons, today we have this kind of situation beside the roads in Bangladesh, creating bad smells and leading to illnesses. Besides, it's a big problem for the general public as well—they also throw food and other things on the roads. Overall, administrative management is very poor, and the people aren't good either.

04 Tell us the efforts that have been made to address it, and tell us your solution to the problem.

At this time, the administration has taken many legal measures to solve this problem, but they have neglected it to some extent, and there are reasons for that. About two years ago, the fascist government we had went away, and the new government that has started improving our Bogura city a lot. The work of repairing the roads around the city has begun.

We have a big responsibility here, which is to help with our humanitarian work. If one person throws garbage, another person can get sick, so we should fix these issues within our own responsibility. There is a proverb that says, 'If you are good, the world is good,' so we need to be good ourselves, and then the world will be good.

05 As someone who wants this problem to be solved, tell us how community members, organisations, or government can help

To solve this problem, I can look at it in two ways: one is through the government, and the other is through an organization. Personally, I am working on creating my own organization, and I have this kind of idea in mind. Let me talk about my own first: I want to create an organization that works entirely in a humanitarian way and cleans the streets. It's a big humanitarian task, and in the long run, it will bring good results for us.

On the government side, of course, it is extremely important. It's the government's responsibility, and their duty is to ensure cleanliness and include the whole country in safety and cleanliness measures. They will thoroughly check everything everywhere and instruct officials to perform their duties properly.
