I Planted Cassava Late Again: What the harvest has taught me

INTRODUCTION

As a small-scale farmer, I have come to understand that farming is not only about planting crops at the expected time. Sometimes, circumstances can cause a farmer to plant later than planned. What matters is understanding the situation, monitoring the crops and carefully learning and observing the results.

For the past year and now this year, I have been experimenting with late cassava planting and I planted cassava late last year, and after allowing it to grow, I eventually harvested it. The result is not far from what obtains during regular farming season. Interestingly, rather to stop there, I decided to plant cassava late again this year. I have already completed the planting this September, and I am now looking forward to seeing how this year's crop will perform.

My Experience With Last Year's Late Planting

Last year's late planting gave me an opportunity to observe what happens when cassava is planted later than the usual planting period. After planting, I had to monitor the cassava as it developed and deal with the normal challenges that come with farming, especially weeds and maintaining the field.

Eventually, I harvested the cassava. That experience gave me something more valuable than the harvest itself — practical knowledge.
Rather than relying completely on what I read or hear about cassava farming, I was able to observe the crop on my own farm and learn from the results.

Planting Cassava Late Again

After harvesting last year's crop, I cleared the land and decided to plant cassava again. This time, I have also planted in September, and the planting has already been completed.
Now, the real observation begins.

I will be watching how quickly the cassava cuttings sprout, how well they establish, how they respond to rainfall, how much weed competition develops and how the plants grow over time. I will also be interested in the eventual root development and harvest.

This year's planting gives me another opportunity to compare my experience with last year's crop. I do not want to assume that because last year's cassava performed a certain way, this year's crop will automatically do the same.

Conclusion

For me, farming is a continuous learning process. Every planting season presents an opportunity to observe, make adjustments and gain experience.

My late cassava planting last year gave me practical experience, and now I have planted late again this September. I am interested in seeing whether this year's crop will follow a similar pattern or produce different results.
I will continue to monitor the farm and document the progress as the cassava grows. Hopefully, by the time I harvest, I will have even more useful information to share with other small-scale farmers.

Have you ever planted cassava late? What was your experience like?
