Free vegetable hiding on the okro farm

Hi Steemit family, hope you are all doing well. For those who don’t know me, my name is Nanaeraba and today I want to discuss food waste that is happening on our farms.

Most farmers that grow okro would only harvest the soft pods and then throw away the rest of the plant and let it dry up in the sun. Okro leaves are actually food. The young leaves are very rich in iron, folate and calcium which are actually free nutrients for the body.

They melt down in stews just like spinach or kontomire and taste great when added to any dish.

It can also save you a lot of money. Like I have said before in previous blogs and videos, the cost of green vegetables can fluctuate greatly depending on the time of year and even the pattern of the rain. If you have an okro plant in your yard, you can go and get some free fresh greens any time you want. You won’t have to spend any money going to the market for them every week.

Picking the young top leaves of your okro plant really benefits the plant. It allows sunlight to reach the lower branches of the plant which can prevent damp fungus from growing on the plant.

Also, the main okro pods on the plant will grow bigger. So you get to eat double the amount of food from the same piece of land without having to spend any extra money.
