Death Toll Hits 1,385 on Day 17 as the Devighat Bridge Opens and 104 Bodies Get Names

in #nepal8 days ago

This is a special report in our Bhote Koshi / Rasuwa flood series.

Seventeen days after the surge, Friday’s 11 a.m. NDRRMA sheet is 1,385 recovered and 5,130 missing. The missing number did not fall. Eight more bodies were found. Two more were named. No fifth person came out of a tunnel.

Friday morning sheet

NDRRMA, 11 September 2026, 11:00 a.m.

  • 1,385 bodies recovered
  • 5,130 missing (same as Thursday after 104 identified bodies were taken off the list)
  • 13,676 rescued
  • 21,022 security personnel still deployed
  • 37 holding centres — 2,615 in Nuwakot, 775 in Rasuwa, 295 in Dhading
  • more than 1,700 helicopter flights to date

Rasuwa’s recovered count jumped from 178 on Thursday to 185. That is seven bodies in one district overnight. The rest of the rise is scattered.

Tibet / Gyirong remains in the earlier band of about 43 dead and 519 missing. Combined confirmed dead is still near 1,430.

A bridge, not a miracle

The one piece of infrastructure news that matters today: the Acrow / temporary bridge over the Tadi at Devighat is open. MoFA recorded it yesterday. ANI repeated it this morning. That is the first fixed crossing on a stretch that had been forcing trucks and LPG onto air and long detours.

It does not reopen the whole Prithvi Highway. It does mean Nuwakot and points north can take more road tonnage than they could on Monday.

The tunnels are still three holes in the mud

There is no Friday live rescue. The hunt is still Chilime, Trishuli-3A and 3B. About 121 hydropower workers were still thought to be underground as of the start of the week. Oxygen pipes and pumps are in. Voices are not.

The living four from last weekend have not been joined:

  • Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan — Trishuli-3A, 4 September
  • Lu Haitao — Trishuli-1, 5 September
  • Chandika Kumari Shrestha — Betrawati, 5 September

Identification crawls

104 bodies now have names and families. That is two more than Wednesday. DNA sampling from earlier in the week stood at 2,698 (victims plus relatives). More than a thousand remains are already in temporary burial after samples were taken. Police still publish unidentified profiles for families to check.

Until those matches land, 1,385 recovered and 5,130 missing will keep sitting on the same page.

Small money, school desks

USV Pharma put Rs 15 million toward flood victims through the Nepal Medical Association. The Rising Nepal also noted 132 displaced students enrolled at a school this week. That is not reconstruction. It is the first ordinary thing returning — a child in a classroom while the river corridor is still a recovery site.

India’s eighth IAF flight and the 130-tonne running total from Wednesday have not been followed by a ninth in this morning’s sheet.

What Friday changes

Yesterday: 1,377 recovered, DNA ahead of rescue.
Today: 1,385 recovered, 104 named, Devighat open, 5,130 still gone.

Day 17 is a bridge and eight more bodies. It is not another voice from the dark.

Keep riverbanks clear. Missing-person queries: rescue.opmcm.gov.np, 1234, Police 100, NDRRMA 1155. Official donations: pmdrf.nchl.com.np.
