Changing your DNA with CRISPR technology

Healing from a disease or enhancing your body

For thousands of years, we believed our genetic information was permanent; if a mutation caused a hereditary disease, it would stay with the person for life. That began to change with the advent of CRISPR technology, which is capable of editing specific segments of the genetic code with unprecedented precision. Today, this technique is already being used experimentally to correct serious genetic diseases.

One of the best-known examples is the treatment for sickle cell anemia, in which the patient's own cells are genetically modified before being reintroduced into the body. In clinical studies, the majority of patients remained free of the disease's painful crises following treatment, demonstrating that, in some cases, correcting a single DNA sequence can completely transform a person's life.

Genetic engineering continues to evolve; one of the latest technologies is known as Prime Editing. Instead of simply cutting the DNA and relying on the cell's natural repair mechanism, it functions like a biological text editor, replacing specific letters in the genetic code with far greater precision and reducing unwanted alterations.

This approach could pave the way for even safer treatments for hereditary diseases and, in the future, even for neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's.
