Figure AI has found a new way to gather the data needed to teach its humanoid robots to perform real-world tasks; instead of relying solely on the robots themselves to generate this information, the company has started paying people to record videos of themselves performing everyday activities.

The platform behind this is called Index ; it was quietly developed under an initiative known as Project Goig and has now been made publicly available for iOS and Android. It works in a relatively simple way: users can select specific tasks within the app, record videos of themselves performing those activities, and submit the footage to Figure in exchange for payment.

The recordings cover household chores—such as folding laundry, making beds, and cleaning rooms—as well as activities performed in restaurants, retail stockrooms, and logistics facilities. Another option involves hiring workers through the platform itself to carry out tasks while their actions are recorded from a first-person perspective.

The scale the project has reached is already significant; during approximately four months of operation prior to the public launch, Figure reports that Index received 16 million videos produced across 108 countries. The application reached 264,000 downloads and over 44,000 weekly active users. According to the company, approximately 30 minutes of new footage are added every second; for every 1,000 hours of data collected, Figure records an average of 373 different tasks, over 1,100 manipulated objects, and 116 distinct environments.

The company has already distributed $15 million to participants and plans to invest further in data collection and computing capacity over the coming months. Figure’s strategy thus bridges two aspects of the same challenge: on one hand, the company is drastically increasing the volume and diversity of data showing how people perform physical tasks; on the other, it uses its artificial intelligence architecture to translate that learning into movements executed by humanoids in the real world.

Figure has already manufactured over 1,000 Figure 03 robots and has dozens of them undergoing commercial testing, including operations at the BMW factory in Spartanburg.
