A Foodie's Guide to Shishman Street: Culinary Adventures in Sofia, Bulgaria - photo story by @shemzee
Dear friends,
I`ve told you about Shishman street in a previous post
but today I`m going to tell you more about culinary adventures in Sofia, Bulgaria.
This morning, together with my wife and son, we headed back to this beloved street, well known for its old-world charm and vibrant atmosphere.
Walking along Shishman is an absolute sensory delight. The street comes alive with a unique blend of cozy, bohemian flower shops decorated with lace and rustic greenery, cozy local spots like the classic Mamma Mia pizzeria, and artisan dessert shops like Gelateria Naturale.
Every few steps, colorful outdoor displays draw you in—from wire baskets bursting with fresh, vibrant fruits like bright red pomegranates, glossy apples, and crisp watermelons to hand-painted shop windows celebrating natural local ingredients. It’s a place where traditional soul meets modern foodie culture, making it the perfect setting for a family morning walk and a delicious food hunt!
We kicked off our culinary adventure at Gelateria Naturale, located right at 12 Shishman Street. We treated ourselves to fresh coffee and some truly incredible artisanal gelato. The display case was filled with delicious, natural flavors—everything from classic strawberry and hazelnut to unique options like honey with poppy seeds, bourbon vanilla, and lavender.
The staff greeted us with warm, friendly service that made us feel right at home. Sitting together on the comfortable sofa, sipping our coffee, and tasting our crisp waffle cones packed with creamy ice cream was the absolute best way to start the morning!
After our sweet start, we moved right next door to Villa Bellucci ( located at 12 Tsar Ivan Shishman Street)—a place where rich history meets exceptional Italian cuisine.
This beautiful building is actually the historic family home of Georgi Gubidelnikov, one of Bulgaria’s wealthiest men of the last century, a prominent banker, and a politician. The house even featured Bulgaria's very first private elevator (which still works today!), and later served as the residence of politician Nikola Petkov in his final years.
Stepping inside, you can instantly feel that storied past preserved in its classic architecture, high ceilings, elegant chandeliers, and dark wood finishes. Divided into cozy, intimate dining rooms, the space offers a relaxed, private atmosphere far away from the bustling city noise outside.
We settled in for lunch, and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. We started with chilled, crisp white wine paired with fresh, warm focaccia bread, fine olive oil with balsamic vinegar, and a vibrant, artfully plated salad topped with fresh greens, citrus, and edible flowers. To finish our meal on a sweet note, we enjoyed rich espresso alongside classic, crispy Sicilian cannoli filled
with sweet cream and topped with crushed pistachios and fresh strawberries. It’s easy to see why Villa Bellucci recently earned the prestigious Ospitalità Italiana award from the Italian Chamber of Commerce—from the impeccable, attentive service to the genuine bohemian spirit of the space, every detail made our family lunch feel like a true Italian getaway right in the heart of Sofia.
A Flavorful Stop at Yum Chinese Restaurant
Our culinary journey along Shishman Street didn't end there! Next, we stopped by Yum, a charming Chinese restaurant right on the street. The decor immediately catches your eye—from its striking, bright red tiled facade accented with traditional paper lanterns to the mesmerizing ceiling indoors, beautifully adorned with layers of intricate red hand fans. The staff welcomed us with exceptionally polite and friendly service, making our visit even more pleasant.
The real highlight, however, was the food! We ordered classic steamed white rice alongside rich, savory stir-fried chicken and beef with vegetables in a glossy dark sauce, as well as a fragrant plate of fried rice packed with colorful veggies.
Everything was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. To top it all off, the price was half of what we spent at the Italian restaurant, making it an incredible value for such a wonderful meal!
To wrap up our food-filled day, we popped into Asia Mart, a fantastic Asian grocery store nearby. Browsing the freezer aisles felt like a mini adventure of its own! We loaded up on some delicious Korean specialties, including Sobaba soy and honey glazed chicken bites and vegetable mandu (Korean dumplings).
Once we got home, we baked everything to golden, crispy perfection—alongside a few Korean-style corn dogs—and turned our haul into a magnificent, cozy family feast right in our own kitchen.
It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day of culinary exploration on Shishman Street!
