Reflection of Solomon: I perceived that I would not possess wisdom unless God gave her to me so I appealed to the Lord and implored him. Wisdom 8:21

In the Book of Wisdom, a sapiential book of the Bible, King Solomon, probably the most glorious ruler of the nation of Israel, reflected and meditated on the importance of wisdom, both as knowledge and as a spiritual gift. For the truth is that wisdom is not a virtue of the soul like justice and prudence, but something more perfect; wisdom comes from God and must be recognized as the greatest blessing man can receive from on high. That is why Solomon wrote: "But I perceived that I would not possess wisdom unless God gave her to me—and it was a mark of insight to know whose gift she was—so I appealed to the Lord and implored him" Wisdom 8:21.
Solomon was not a foolish man but a sensible one, and he asked God, from his heart, for the most excellent and the best, shortly after being crowned king. And God, knowing Solomon's desire, granted it to him at the sacred place of Gibeon as recounted in the Second Book of Chronicles ( 2 Chronicles 1:7-13). And the Book of Wisdom is a reminder of these facts.
Wisdom is, then, a gift—a perfection from on high that God bestows for the performance of extraordinary actions that transcend human reason. As king, Solomon succeeded in realizing what his father David had planned for so many years—the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem—and, furthermore, through a series of political alliances in the Middle East, he established peace and prosperity in a land dominated by war. Solomon was an emulator of God. With these important facts, the great King Solomon demonstrated a very important political principle: that peace and prosperity are the fruits of the wisdom God inspires in rulers.
Reflecting on these spiritual teachings is therefore of great importance in a world where technology and the ambition of powerful men seek to eliminate the grace of God.
