Furious (series): Something new and interesting in the crime/drama genre

I'll watch an episode or two of just about anything in my search for something new and fresh. Since House of the Dragon has been sort of letting me down I have been dabbling in all sorts of things and this series, Furious, has been the one that kind of rises to the top of recent series that I have bothered to watch and I will continue to wait week-by-week for new episodes to be released.

The story starts out pretty wild in the first 10 minutes as a tiny and attractive woman is in an upscale apartment in some sort of large city that is presumed to be NYC and she is just hanging around and tormenting a guy who is struggling upstairs. She wears a mask and is clearly involved in killing him, but not doing it quickly.

She ends him, then we are taken away from that scene and thrust into the usual FBI talking about stuff sequences that introduces us to the main characters on the "hunter" side of things. This all seems formulaic until we get to know that the main character Alice Black, actually has a much more interesting backstory than just your usual "super dedicated cop with an attitude."

She gets to run point on this case because she sees something in it that the other detectives don't really notice and again, this is nothing particularly noteworthy because a ton of other shows have done exactly the same thing.

What does make this series interesting and unique is that there is a big backstory behind these murders that Alice discovers in that that the tiny and attractive woman that we meet at the very beginning in the murder snippet is not your usual serial-killer. She has carefully planned a lot of what is going on here and while I don't yet know the entire story, there is a method to her madness and she is not killing randomly.

Because of the powerful nature of most of her victims Agent Alice starts to figure it out and while she is obligated to find this killer, she kind of starts to sympathize with her motives for doing so and she tries to point this out to any of her superiors that will bother to listen.

The best part of the series in my eyes is the role of Catherine, who calls herself a lot of other things in the story, and the petite and very seductive killer is beautifully played by relative unknown actress Lola Petticrew. I mean, I've never heard of her before, have you?

I don't want to spoil too much about the plot but Lola Petticrew's performance alone is reason enough to give this Hulu production a shot. The way in which this definitely disturbed killer operates is nothing short of genius. She isn't interested in hurting just anyone, she has specific targets in mind and puts a lot of time and effort into achieving these ends. Some might say her progress does seem a bit convenient and made to look easy but for the sake of time they probably needed to make that happen.

It isn't often that I am able to sit down to a brand new series (brand new to me) and tear through all 3 existing episodes in the first night and then be a bit disappointed when there are no more. This is exactly what happened with Furious and I am really excited about next week's release.

Something interesting about this story is that we are basically shown everything, there are no real secrets that get revealed in some sort of twist. We, the audience, have an omnipotent point of view of all the people involved even though they cannot see one another. We see the near misses and the mistakes made by all and how close they were to discovery or to being discovered.

This keeps it pretty fast-paced as more people are added to the roster.

Should I watch it?

I am not normally a fan of crime dramas because there are just too many of them and they all start to feel the same after a while. This one is a bit different than all the CSI/NCIS clones in that we, the audience, get to see everything that is happening and the only people kept in the dark are the characters themselves. Perhaps this is done more frequently than I am recalling but I feel as though this is an interesting way of presenting a crime show.

It kept me interested that is for sure. You also don't really know who to cheer for here because everyone is a sinner and a saint at the same time. The femme fatale is difficult to hate once you understand her motives and this is an interesting way of presenting things in crime.

I think most people will enjoy this but as usual this is not something you want to watch with the kids as the topic matter is quite adult and also brutal.
