Hello, amazing community! 👋💚 I’m excited to share my experience from the first day of the Smile Train SPOON Training for Nutritionists in Nigeria, focused on “Supporting Comprehensive Cleft Care Through Nutrition and Feeding.” It was a wonderful day filled with education, hands-on activities, collaboration, and lots of enjoyment!

🌟 Day One of the Smile Train SPOON Nutrition Training: Knowledge, Enjoyment & Hands-On Skills
We kicked off with quiet opening prayers, allowing everyone to connect with their faith. Dietitian Solomon Kareem launched the training program, and participants introduced themselves, shared their backgrounds, and even discussed their food preferences. 😄 We also set some ground rules for the week, including a fun accountability rule—anyone who breaks a rule must pay a fine equivalent to $1!

Our first session, led by Felicia, covered topics like clefts, their causes, types, embryology, and related health issues. We also engaged in discussions about breastfeeding babies with cleft lip and palate. One of my highlights was the practical exercise on cue-based feeding. We used an orange and straw to demonstrate feeding cues, which made the learning experience more hands-on and memorable. Additionally, we had some stretching exercises to keep our energy up. 😂

The breakout session on early and late feeding cues was another standout moment. Participants matched baby signals to the appropriate cues on cardboard, creating an energetic and interactive atmosphere.
We also discussed breast milk expression, storage methods, sharing of breast milk, and alternatives to breast milk. A hands-on demonstration helped us differentiate between colostrum, foremilk, and hindmilk, emphasizing their nutritional variations.
Another intriguing session focused on infant stomach capacity and diaper output at various ages, using fruits like grapes, lime, tangerine, and lemon as visual aids. 🍇🍋
We wrapped up the day with a breakout activity where we matched nutrients to breast milk, infant formula, and homemade infant formula.
