STEEM EVM Update: New Validator Setup Script & State Sync Fix

in Steem Dev5 days ago

The Steem Virtual Machine (SVM) continues to operate with exceptional stability, having now crossed 353,000 blocks. Today, I am releasing a critical update for new validators joining the network to ensure a smooth and error-free setup process.

Previous Updates

🚨 Important: New Validator Setup Script

Following our coordinated upgrade to v0.0.2-Beta1 at block 254,133, we identified a technical nuance that affects new validators syncing from genesis.

The Issue:
Some changes in the new binary (specifically the "benign redundant attestation" fix) are active from block 1 in the new code but were not present in the old binary. This causes a state divergence at block 11,392, where a transaction that previously failed (code:13) is now treated as a success (code:0).

If a new validator tries to sync from genesis using the new binary, they will encounter an app-hash mismatch at block 11,392 and fail to join the network.

The Solution:
To bypass this historical divergence, new validators must use State Sync instead of syncing from genesis. I have prepared a simple script to automate this process.

How to Join as a New Validator:

  1. Clone the repository if you haven't already.
  2. Run the following command from inside the SteemVirtualMachine-EVM folder:
bash scripts/statesync.sh up

This script will automatically configure your node to sync from a recent state snapshot, skipping the problematic historical blocks and allowing you to join the active set immediately.

Network Health & Statistics

The blockchain remains robust with consistent block production.

Current Network Stats:

  • Total Blocks Produced: 353,000+
  • Total Transactions: 8,994+
  • Average Block Time: 6.6 seconds
  • Active Validators: 10 (Waiting for @justyy and @steem-agora.evm to unjail)

Current Active Validator Set (10 Nodes)
