Be Your (Nasty) Self | I'm Not Everyone's Cup of Tea And That's Fine!
Have you ever wanted to say somethIng but stopped yourself because you were worried about what others might think ?
Have you ever agreed with someone just to avoid in unnecessary argument , even though deep inside you completely disagreed ?
Well, congratulations ! You're probably fameliar with the art of pretending .
We live in a world where everyone seems to be busy maintaining a perfect image . We try to be polite, agreeable, friendly and acceptable . We carefully choose our words, control our reactions and sometimes even hide our real opinions .
But honestly, isn't that exhausting ?
I'm Not Here to Win a PopularIty Contest
Let's be honest: not everyone is going to like you.
Some people won't like your humour. Some won't appreciate your honesty. Others might find your opinions annoying. And guess what? That's life!
I'm not saying we should walk around insulting people or behaving badly . There is a difference between being honest and being deliberately hurtful .
But why should I pretend to enjoy something I don't like ? Why should I agree with an opinion just because everyone else agrees with it ?
If I disagree, I disagree . If something isn't funny, I'm not obligated to laugh . And if I don't have anything meaningful to say, sometimes silence is the best answer .
My Inner Nasty Side
I think everyone has a little mischievous side that doesn't always make it into public .
That sarcastic comment we keep to ourselves, the eye-roll we hide behind a polite smile , or the honest opinion we decide not to share .
Sometimes that little voice inside says, "Just say it!"
And another voice replies, "Please don't . We have a reputation to maintain !"
Honestly, the second voice deserves a salary for all the extra work it does!
But perhaps being your true self doesn't mean letting every thought escape your mouth . It means not being ashamed of your personality, your opinions or your imperfections .
The Problem With Trying to Please Everyone
The more you try to become everyone's favourite person, the more you risk forgetting who you actually are.
You change your words for one person, your behaviour for another, and your opinions for a third . Eventually, you might become so good at pleasing others that you no longer know what pleases you .
And for what? A few compliments? A little approval? A temporary feeling of acceptance?
I'd rather be genuinely liked by a few people than pretend to be someone I'm not just to impress a crowd.
So, What's My Rule?
Be your nasty self, but know where to draw the line .
Be sarcastic, but don't humiliate people. Be honest, but don't use honesty as an excuse for cruelty . Have opinions, even unpopular ones . Laugh at yourself, accept your mistakes and don't pretend to be perfect .
Because being authentic doesn't mean being the nicest person in every room . It means being comfortable enough with yourself that you don't need to wear a different personality for every audience .
I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and I don't intend to be . After all, the world already has enough tea varieties!
A special thank you to @wakeupkitty for organizing this creative contest and giving us the opportunity to express ourselves, think outside the box, and share our creativity with the Steemit community. Your efforts are truly appreciated!
