POLL: Are Communities Outdated?

Phew, I’ve seen them all come and go, all those communities, from the wealthy to the struggling little ones with brilliant ideas. So many administrators were bossy and busy gathering all the SP from the members, a large proportion of whom never received the proper, promised upvote.
There were armies of paid moderators, and the large communities in particular received a great deal of support +! salary. The small, often creative communities had to do without. These were often groups of like-minded people from the same country, or who spoke the same language, or who shared the same interests.
There’s nothing quite like knowing that a community stands for something and knowing where to find which topics.
There are still communities where members always receive a generous upvote, even if their post leaves a lot to be desired, and it is nothing more than an upvote given by agreement or out of habit. So there is no reward for quality, because the post adds value to the community or makes Steemit look better.
A large proportion of the administrators, as well as moderators, have lined their pockets handsomely, and there are even those who have made off with the funds. All of this was done with forethought, and despite all the fraud, they were still supported, with many of these individuals being given high-ranking and recurring roles. This leaves little room for change or for tackling corruption.
Everyone is free to post wherever they like. You don’t have to post in a community, you don’t have to give your SP to a community, you don’t have to give a certain percentage of your upvotes to a community or individual, and you don’t have to let yourself be threatened, and yes, all this sort of behaviour did and does occur.
Fortunately, much of the pressure and control exerted by moderators telling others how to write has disappeared since last year. Part of the reason is that, to receive an upvote, Steemians no longer need to be part of a club and… the booming votes are no longer allocated to communities (a reason to disappear), although these are still in the hands of the same people.
The reason I started communities wasn’t because I wanted a large group of members, but because I was looking for a way to organise what I wrote. And indeed, I started this primarily for myself.
We are now seeing more and more communities disappear, sometimes because moderators bully the administrator out and then set up something new to seize ‘power’, sometimes because the administrator is unable to invest in the members, sometimes because members drift away or leave swallowed up by the cares of life, and more often because there is no clear focus that sets them apart from other communities making them losing their face.
The smaller communities seem to be weathering this storm. Particularly those that focus on a clear theme and also have time to engage with members. A number are adrift, and the posts are mainly standard reports with links, about gaming and… the diary game. The easy way of posting is what gets rewarded even though there's no improvement if it comes to posting after many years and the project ended longer ago.
Are communities a thing of the past,
just like writers and creative people who still come along to brighten up the lives of others, even though they’re usually forgotten?
What do you say? A community is a way to find like-minded, to connect and help you grow or "I do not want you back"?
Prize:
I’m offering a prize of 20 SP to the person with the best-reasoned comment alongside the vote!
Feel free to share your thoughts on the above or suggest a new idea to breathe new life into Steemit and raise its profile to the outside world.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re a newcomer or have been here since day one.

Thank you!
Senang kamu kembali lagi.
You are nominated by True Colours.
Congratulations!

I must clarify that given the format of the Blockchain-based social networks, I believe, have communities as a way to "classify" posts.
Or at least that was the intention. Now I see that a community title can have themes different from what one would expect to find.
That's why I believe that now, or perhaps always, communities have been a kind of tacit alliance, where votes are exchanged for votes cast. Perhaps I'm wrong.
I personally write in communities where there is freedom and support, not only in votes, but also in advice, and where there are topics that interest me.
When I created my Steem account, I sought support from the Latin American community because of the language barrier. I received penalties when I wasn't ignored.
That's why I believe community moderators hold the key to a community's success or failure. Some lack maturity and misuse their role, which alienates members.
Although communities have their flaws, personal blogs would have a bigger flaw: only truly interesting authors would get voluntary visits, the rest would get lost in a sea of posts.
Finally, I believe that the corruption you mention has caused serious people to view Steem, Hive, or Blurt with skepticism, because there is no fair retribution.
Looking at communities in general, I feel most are just overated. Since they all know them selves, we know how their post get higher votes from others.
As a new user you are left on your own to figure out how things work in some communities you pick interest. And there no a support or reward to motivate the new comers to keep writing. That's why you see after two or three days. If a new comer does see reward on his or her post they tend to be discouraged and which they finally back out.
I was actually happy when I saw a particular community willing to organize a weekly competition for writers in which it will encourage writers to write consistently daily and also comment on other people's writing but as you can tell it didn't happen.
I.was going through a particular community and I saw a task I could participate, as a new comer I joined, I did my best in making sure what I did was the best, but as you can tell the old members as usual got the higher price while I got it low even when I felt my write was much more better than Few other... I was kind of discouraged though.
For me I feel new comers and also every other persons should be carried along in a community not only the old members doing their thing like as if the new comers are suppose to be here in the first place.
Actually, there is a Steem Curator team for newcomers since month and for even longer newcomers are guided and given advice.
Many opinions are shared about this fact and it is discussed which are the most loyal Steemians or if you like 'thebdie hards'.
Unfortunately these are not the Steemians who received high upvotes as a newcomer and been helped. They took the money and ran withoutbglreturninf the support. Literally everyone being longer and known figured it out alone and most did it without a single vote during the first period from one month up to years.
So question is: why did they join? How come they did not understand PoB, what made them believe others would find their post among thousands of others?
Dit they read the Steemit FAQ? If yes, did they understand they are on their own and there's no one to help them out?
This might sound bitter but is the truth. Only by connection to others, commenting and asking the way it is possible to know the answers to the questions.
That is how I figured it out and sooner or later I always someone willing to explain.
As a newcomer you also have a commitment to the other members and you cannot expect those being longer around the pull the entire carriage one handed. They also started at zero.
If it comes to the prizes if contests I noticed the same. A good reason for me to no longer join. In my case because the winners were always selected among the own country fellows.
Everything you bring up here if it comes to newcomers has been discussed since years and the worst that happened was bringing in new members with false promises like: you post and earn a fat upvote.
Yeah...I practically understand now. Even with your last sentence were you said new members are given the false promises: you post and earn a fat votes. Actually I noticed some newcomers are no longer active as before.
Yes, and that exactly is the problem. They do not care. Are not willing to figure out how it works, will not invest in connections.
So lifting them is a waste of votes which can be given to others always neglected.
But I was just thinking....can there be a place as an instructions been placed in which newcomer can know what to post on a particular community and also know their limits?
I understand, because I think we all go through that newcomer phase at some point. Starting out here is difficult, partly because there are so many bots, and sometimes people think a "new user" might be a potential bot. It's time, consistency, and dedication that make all the difference. I see it this way: "You see someone for the first time, and even if you like them right away, you don't usually 'open your heart' to them immediately. Those relationships—the affection, the support, the reading, and the comments—are built over time."
The most important thing is to try to connect with people from different parts of the world who are like-minded and share your way of thinking. Hugs.
Honestly I have actually learned a lot through this poll. This is actually my first hearing about bot here on steemit, although I actually know about the ones on telegram and the rest. We learn everyday actually. Thank you very much friend 🤝🏾
Yes. This place is wonderful if you see it as a space for learning and interacting with people from around the world. Sending you a big hug from Venezuela.
Bots are everywhere. Customer service, schools, and this morning they said in the news insurances have to deal with AI used by customers sending fake bills and asking money from them. The good news is that those using AI are noticed unlike what users believe. The same counts for those using AI here.
Yeah. I even wanted to speak about the use of AI here. You look at how contest are been organized here, but users makes use of AI to create pictures to present a better font or those using AI pictures to talk about a particular topic. I honestly feel things ought to be real. I guess without AI, there was Alternatives in presenting things.
I remember the time we mainly posted without pictures and that went great, next it was "use a photo" to be noticed among the test. The truth is most first photos suck.
After that it was Canva. Check the feed and see underneath many photos: made by Canva or: source blah blah.
What type of opening sentence is that?
Now it is AI although about one year ago it wasn't liked and even fought.
Personally, I do not care if the text is good, but if it comes to it Is prefer to read without photos or pictures which have rarely something to do with the text. I even find it disturbing to read text like these.
I agree with you that all those AI generated pictures and text are overwhelming and make this platform less interesting to scroll through since it is this, diaries title after title or automated gaming reports.
I do understand there are not able to take and upload good photos and the problem is that also sites with free to use photos like Pixabay.com provides in AI generated pictures.
If it comes to me the magic of AI became close to annoying. Many times it is wrong and taken for the truth.
You know in the community Italy was a contest where we used the same prompt and an AI of our choice to generate a picture. In the post you had to describe how you did. Interesting was the different pictures shown and the lack of creativity and possibilities of AI. It was nice testing this out but that was it.
The only way to change the flood of AI photos and be noticed is by using your own photos or... nothing.
Btw, All this has been discussed many times but I guess the lazy ones decide and will be hard to instruct. Their reply will be: thank you, next time I will.
That next time will never arrive. We have been there too.
I assume a change might come and stay if the upvotes are 0 and remain zero.
Enjoy your Monday.
❤️
I am glad I am actually learning something more than just writing alone here...thank you very much 🤝🏾
It's my pleasure. If you like to know more have a look at all the collected posts in the community SCB Monkey Business @hive-152479
I am not sure what you mean by "communities and getting higher upvotes". There was a time this was the payment for the contests and the payment for being a moderator, which takes a lot of time, that is if you read every post, check it for plagiarism, AI use, have to check all posts in the account of the author, scroll back to his very first post, check his comments so compare writing style and and and ...
If it comes to the member: they are also part of the community. Without members there is no community.
The question is why a vote is given.
For good content? For being loyal? For delegating all SP? For being a moderator? To be able to pay prizes for contests? (Do they still exist or are most gone since many hosts only had (several) because they had never to pay it from their own wallet?)
I just checked several newcomers being supported, I delegated SP to during a project to help newcomers, the SC curator team voted for and even gave booming votes to trash content to help those newcomers grow. I can tell you it does not motivate them to come back, not even to improve or say "thank you". Most of them already know the tricks since they are introduced by the same person. No upvote is big enough to make lazy one, the one who doesn't like to write or a scammer improve. Let alone being loyal. They go where they believe the money flows. Giving up items back is also not in it.
I still agree with the one who said that those being thrown into the deep and had to figure it out on their own are the better ones, more committed and more willing to comment, upvote and reply.
Look at yourself. You not even read and reply what I wrote to you as SC09...
Please can you tag me to it again? I was currently busy with several activities on my hand , please don't be offended.
Just look in your account underneath comments. It should show if youbdidn't reply or follow the thread above this one to read all the comments.
Hola @wakeupkitty.pal.
My dear @marcybetancourt, I admire you, and I always say so. You are an intelligent, intuitive person and a good manager. The problem is that it's difficult to manage honestly in a world where corruption abounds, and this applies to Steemit, to countries around the world, and to all organizations that seem destined to fall into the wrong hands. Hugs.
Unfortunately that is true. There's no room for honest people unlike what they preach. 😞
I think communities are a good idea. One can post accordingly, and get their posts read by like minded people who are more likely to give some support. Unfortunately, it seems that is not how it works.
I have no idea what is involved in setting up a community, or what prompted people to set up communities. But from what you mentioned, it seems people behind the communities cared more for the returns than the community - present company excepted. And if that were so, it is no wonder that most of the communities failed.
I have tried posting in a few communities. It was like posting into the void. There was not the slightest recognition for my efforts. In the end, I just stuck with the community that acknowledged my posts with a small vote.
I'm a moderator for the #venezolanossteem community. This hasn't been a privileged community on the platform; quite the opposite. Sometimes I look at all the ones that have closed and think how brave we've been to stay. Perhaps our bravery has come from not having much money, and what little we've had we've shared with our users. We're always ready to comment on posts. We educate and encourage people to stay. Time has shown us that the effort has been worthwhile. We still don't have much money, but we have plenty of dignity as moderators of a community that loves and promotes art. Hugs, @quotes-haven.
It is good to know that there are people like you who care about the community. Keep up the good work. I wish you success with your community.
Enjoy your weekend. Cheers!
Thank you for your words and your support, my friend.
Gracias por tus palabras y por tu apoyo, amigo mío.
It was exactly the same for me. I no longer post in various communities, because I didn’t like having my creativity criticised and being told that I can’t write and that I should write the way they expect me to.
I’ve had arguments on several occasions because the moderator couldn’t explain why I had to allocate a certain percentage of my upvotes to them.
I rarely received upvotes, and it took more effort than it was worth. I noticed that certain communities are discriminatory: they only want that percentage and then ignore you.
That’s not what the word ‘community’ means to me.
I decided to give up on those big communities, the contests, courses and challenges, as it’s always the same people who win, not to mention the fact that I found the hosts lacked the skills or knowledge. Many did it simply because they received high upvotes, which was the only reason to apply.
I must say it was a relief to step away from all of this and create my own world doing what I enjoy.
In the end, what matters most is that I post what I like and receive a bit of appreciation. That’s why I make a point of leaving comments.
Greetings @wakeupkitty
There is no point in arguing or getting upset on here. People are not going to listen, or care very much about what you have to say. They are going to do what they do, and you have no control over them. It is a decentralised platform - a good and also bad thing. Good that people are free to do what they want and bad because there is no control. It's each for himself/herself and anything and everything goes.
You are one of the most active and hardworking Steemians on here. Just continue doing what pleases you. Cheers!
Are you sure this platform is decentralised? If that would be the case Steem Curatirs wouldn't exist, neither all those rules set by steemitblog, the steemit team and moderators (in the past). No one would help out or could come to your aid and there wouldn't be anyone fighting spam, scam and so on.
Right. My bad. Steemit is only partly decentralized. It runs on a decentralized blockchain, but the website and company behind it are centralized.
I like the idea of Communities. We at Dream Steem see ourselves as a friendly and open bunch, which, sadly... is dying out. We have a clear focus – fiction writing – yet day in, day out, non-fiction pieces are being published. One of the few rules is that the official language is English, but even long-serving Steemians with moderation experience themselves couldn’t care less about such trifles. I’ve had enough of this rubbish.
There are story, fiction, tale writers present. I struggled with the same. What I call a story (fiction/tale) others come up with their personal life, a type of diarygame.
Within CCC everyone publishes in English everyone and if they write in a different language they should add a translation. It works, meaning being harsh/strict is the only way.
I remember I once asked after #wewrite why all of a sudden the language of your community was no longer English. I never understood why that happened overnight.
By the way, I do believe that if someone with limited electricity, 23 hours or 5 days without, same for money to buy WiFi, like @almaguer in Cuba can translate others can to.
So write yourself and post in your community and simply make clear what it stands for, what the language is and a story plus warn and mute those who do not stick to the rules.
There are plenty of other communities to post whatever people like next to the own blog.
I still find it a pity rubbish cannot be deleted but you can mute so use it. This is what I do.
cc @solperez
At least I make use of the disadvantages I have. I could simply collapse in a corner of the supermarket and turn to stone. A symbolic statue. But I suppose that's not an option for me. I think that for as long as I can remember, everything has been difficult; there haven't been any easy times. Even the internet arrived in my country 35 years after the rest of the world was using it, and that didn't mean ordinary people had access. Endless years passed; it was even forbidden to own a cell phone. When they were finally allowed, telephone service was by far the most expensive in the world. More than a dollar a minute. And both the caller and the receiver paid the same. It cost them the same. The internet is a phenomenon of roughly five years. It's still the most expensive and worst in the world. P.S.: Currently, with a salary of 2700 divided by the 670-peso dollar exchange rate, you'd be earning about 4 dollars a month. There are data plans for 12,000 Cuban pesos. 6GB of data.
I admire you not only for your talent as a writer, painter, and teacher, but above all for your strength in enduring so many of life's hardships. I have hope that everything can change. I believe we deserve a break from "normal life." Hugs.
The system you currently have for WiFi and phones, including both laying: caller and receiver we had too. Providers were free to ask what they liked.
A mobile phone bill of 500 euros per month 10+ years ago is ridiculous.
Till today I rarely call. This year zero times.
I rather wait three hours in a chat or six weeks for a reply on my email instead of making a call and being ripped off.
Certainly, communities set their own rules and try to ensure that users who come to post there adhere to them. However, many people don't bother to read the rules and just start posting. Therefore, the community administrator or moderators, if there are any, have to issue warnings about this, and it's not easy. What you say about the limitations of electricity and internet connection is a real issue, especially in countries experiencing political crises, weather problems, earthquakes, or war. These aren't exactly favorable times for anyone, but the platform could become an "escape" to find the much-needed peace of mind we all crave.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had to put up with slow internet. I remember making a comment about this, this was before the hard fork, and then I got a reply from another freewriter who lives in America and also had excruciatingly slow internet. The fastest internet I’ve ever had was back in the 1990s, when I still had to dial in via the telephone, imagine that.
I decided to sign up for a private internet service because it was impossible to work with a public connection. It's really helped me be more active on the platform. Now the problem is the electricity service, which is terrible.
I occasionally posted in the Dream Steem community, and I know the effort you put into organizing contests with keywords and book-related themes. But, unfortunately, the effort required to write a good work of fiction isn't the same as writing a "diary," so most people opted for the latter; I did too, since diaries often received more financial rewards than a short story that kept me up not just for one day, but for several. So, I, who am not a big fan of the easy way out, watched many users grow up lacking creativity, while I continued trying to make this Steem world a place for dreaming. Best regards.
Those days of the diaries passed. That SC team doesn't exist since months or is it years by now? And even if you write such a post about your day a more interesting/attractive/catching title could be used.
Straight to the point
No, Not really!
Can't remember if any community or individual forced me for delegation or beneficiaries, I did it by my personal choice and for benefit ofcourse. It was like give and take type of deal to me. Definitely we are free on blockchain based social media platforms but community contributed on our growth so I think publishing content in a particular community is fine and no communities aren’t overrated to me. I find them helpful and appreciated my blogs with upvote using community account without asking anything in return.
I liked this discussion topic and would like to thank you my friend, Kitty 🫰🫶✌️🦋😇🎉
How about communities with a certain theme?
You post in Italy. Are you Italian? Do you share Italian history or daily life or food or?
Do you scroll through the community for other posts to read and comment on?
Well, nice question! Italy actually an emotion because I was appreciated the team Italy since the beginning of posting with that community. I never felt external or ignored so I continue posting there. Though I try other communities too and honestly yes, I'm there Where I'm loved and prioritized. That's the reason behind being so much active with Italy community. Have a good friendship with team members.
Thanks for asking!
This means you are loyal and so are they.
It is the same with me, but also works the other way round...if they attacked me, no matter how long ago, or abused me I will never list their again.
I do not see any point in lifting such a community with my posts.
Well I can understand you, if I ever forced or insisted by anyone to delegate or post I simply ignore and never gave chance to ask the same thing again, I'll do the same. I mostly forget but now I recall one and it happened when community CCS changed moderator and I didn’t like the new moderator appointing so I gave up posting there but I forget that user name I didn’t liked or had some issues that I forgot too. LOL 🤣
It is good to forget. Moderators changed a lot if it comes to most communities. Unfortunately I would say. Are you sure it wasn't me? You remember me. 🤣
But no kidding it isn't always easy to wear different hats, but one has to depending on whose hat you wear. If it is totally against my way of working or thinking I would say "no thanks" to the job, same as I did in real life. Such a relieve. A great Saturday.
No, definitely it's not you and sorry that community name was CCS and admin was a nice and supportive one and he appointed a moderator with whom I had some argument and issues that's why I left CCS community for writing and it was my personal way to work, if the environment is fine for me I'll share my content as you can see I'm with Italy for long time even when the post support isn't promising and there is no commitment or deal. I like so I share, that's it. Have a blessed Friday, I think you're a day advance over there hehehe 😁😂😇🦋💖
I’ve also asked several questions there at one point. It’s unclear to me who the administrator is, but also why there aren’t any photos of campsites and nature, as you’d expect given the community’s theme. At one point, I noticed the moderators coming and going, and the last time someone applied to be a moderator, they were even given five upvotes a day! And you always see the same people applying and getting the job. I don’t think they’re there anymore, but I don’t know why. In any case, that community isn’t going to look any better, and all sorts of things are being posted there now. To be honest, I wouldn’t want that. Even if I were the only one. I think it’s good that, when we know what we’re writing about, we decide for ourselves where we want to post. If the Wildecommunity doesn’t allow that, then that’s the end of it; either there are enough of us to start our own community, or you can simply post on your own blog. Once people’ve found you and know what you’re writing about, they’ll look you up by name or in the community where they know you post. At least, that’s how I work.
It may well be that I’m living in your future. It’s Sunday now, the start of a new week. I wish you all the best.
