Drying Paddy Rice on Our Rooftop 🌾
Rice is one of most important foods in our daily life. In my country people eat rice with different dishes. Some people like biryani while others enjoy simple rice with curry or lentils. But before rice comes to our plate there is a lot of hard work behind it. Today I want to share something about paddy rice which we are drying on our rooftop. I paddy spread over a large sheet on our roof. These are not white rice grains we usually cook at home. They are still covered with outer husk. Before we can use them for cooking we need to take them to a rice mill where husk will be removed and rice will be separated.
We spread paddy on roof so this can dry in sunlight. This is very important step because paddy contains moisture after harvest. Proper dry help prepare it for milling and storage. We need to check it and turn grains from time to time. We also have to protect them from rain dust and birds.
Rice is a good source of carbohydrates which give our body energy for daily activities. It is easy to prepare and can be cooked in many different ways. Brown rice also contains more fibre than white rice because it keeps more of outer layers of grain. Rice is an important food for many families and it is used in many traditional dishes.
In Pakistan rice farming is also important for farmers and country's agriculture. Many people work hard in fields to grow and harvest this crop. From planting seeds to cutting crop and drying paddy every step needs time and effort. When I see these grains drying on our rooftop I remember that even simple food has a long journey before it reaches our kitchen.
After paddy becomes properly dry we will take it to mill to get rice. I am waiting for that next step because it is always nice to see final result of our work. For me this is not just about rice. It is also about our daily life and small tasks we do at home.
We should respect farmers and value food we eat every day. A plate of rice may look simple but a lot of effort goes into producing it. I feel happy to share this little part of our daily life with you all.

There is a specific kind of attention in writing about the rice part the way you did. Recipes travel like dialects. Same dish, different household, different rules, and most people skip straight past it. What did this replace in your kitchen?
