Ten new cards are coming to animalCards [burnsteem100]
I noticed that the animalCards cards were getting overweight on the North American continent (i.e. my back yard ;-), so the species on the ten cards I added this weekend can mostly be found in Europe and/or South America. The new Bird cards are now complete. The Fish, Mammals, and Reptiles & Amphibians still need to be filled out.
To be clear, none of the following cards are available in the live game yet. They are expected to arrive sometime during Q4/2026.
Here are the latest new cards in the animalCards deck that will start being distributed sometime this quarter:
Legendary
| Andean Condor | Black Crowned Crane |
|---|---|

(Oh, there's a bug. We need to enforce a standard card size. ;-))
Today I learned: The Black Crowned Crane is the national bird of Nigeria.
Epic
| Atlantic Puffin | Chilean Flamingo |

Rare

Common
| European Goldfinch | European Starling |

| House Sparrow | Northern Mockingbird |

Looking ahead
- I'll be fixing the above-mentioned card size problem.
- When the new cards start getting distributed, it is not expected to change any past distributions. After the activation block (block number TBD) passes, the new cards should simply start being distributed to new BurnMaxxers, along with the existing ones.
- Assuming that the phase-in mechanism works, it's time to start thinking about launching a version of the deck that's not labeled, "unstable".
- In the Collections page, I'll be creating a new group of geographic collections that summarizes card possession according to the continents where the species are present.
- I might rearrange the sections on the cards so that the photo shows up properly in the feed thumbnails on condenser websites (desktop version).
- Possibly a new feature to turn each card into an online playable jigsaw puzzle with blog integration when the puzzle is completed. Each card and serial number would generate its own unique jigsaw puzzle.
- This is scope creep, but I kind-of like the idea, so... maybe.
- After that, it might be time to revisit the roadmap.
Participation requested
If you want to help determine the direction of the game, here are some ways to participate:
- Suggestions for species names and public domain photos to be included.
- Validate that the photographer info on the cards is correct, especially the iNaturalist observation numbers.
- Participate with code development in github.
- If you would like to have your own photo included on a card, let me know.
- This is not comprehensive, but here is a general idea about the photo submissions.
No people or parts of people (i.e. hands/feet) in the photos.
No pets or animals in zoos, cages, or enclosures.
Animals in the photos must be alive and healthy in appearance.
Photos don't need to be professional-grade, but they should be in clear focus and reasonably well lit.
Photographers waive all usage rights so that the game can use them and Steem authors can include the cards in their blog posting.
I'm looking for real photos - not AI - obviously.
And so on. In short, be tasteful and stick to wild animals.
The game also suggests setting beneficiary settings as a gratuity to the photographer on the cards (Common - 1%, Rare - 2%, Epic - 4%, Legendary - 8%, and Mythic - 16%), but of course, choosing to do so is entirely up to the authors/collectors.
Update: The pre-release cards can now be viewed, here: New animalCards for Q4/2024.
Be forewarned, however, that card distributions after block number 110611473 are for testing purposes only. The distributions that show in the live version are the ones that are expected to endure.

FYI, according to Claude, this is the existing count by continent. Species that exist on multiple continents are counted in all relevant locations, so the total is higher than the card count.
So, I'll still be leaning away from North America for the remaining ~35 cards that still need to be added.
