National heroes willingly left their beloved families to fight on the battlefield; many even laid down their lives for the singular goal of achieving an independent Indonesia. Consequently, the entire nation regards the August 17 commemoration as an expression of respect and gratitude toward those fighters. Without the heroes' struggle, we would not be able to live freely, pursue an education, or determine our nation's own destiny. The commemoration of Indonesia's independence is marked by a variety of activities that are both solemn and festive.
The highlight of the Indonesian Independence Day celebration is the flag-raising ceremony held simultaneously across the country from the State Palace and government offices to schools and remote villages. The Red and White flag is hoisted with solemnity to the strains of the national anthem, Indonesia Raya. Following the ceremony, the atmosphere shifts to one of jubilation. Schools and local communities typically host traditional Independence Day contests, such as sack races, tug-of-war, the panjat pinang (greased pole climbing) contest, kerupuk (cracker) eating races, and quiz competitions.

Additionally, carnivals, cultural parades, and art performances showcase the nation's rich regional diversity. However, commemorating Independence Day requires more than just ceremonies and competitions. The challenges facing the nation today differ significantly from the struggles of the past. While we once fought to expel colonizers, we now battle poverty, ignorance, corruption, division, and dependency on other nations.
The best way to honor our independence is to give it meaning through positive actions: students excelling in their studies, teachers instructing with sincerity, workers laboring honestly, and all citizens upholding unity and tolerance. Independence is a gift, but preserving it is a shared responsibility. Thus, the Independence Day commemoration serves as a reminder that independence is not the end of the struggle, but the beginning of a great responsibility.
