My fellow steemians,

I’m delighted to participate in the challenge SLC-S33 / W6: “Our Surroundings: Let’s Talk About the News” – How has traffic been in your region? hosted by @kibreay001. Today, I want to talk about a serious traffic problem in my area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The place I want to focus on is Mohammadpur Bus Stand, a very busy area with a large population. Every day, many people pass through this place on their way to work, school, college, and other destinations. Mohammadpur Bus Stand is an important junction where four roads meet.

One road leads towards Dhanmondi, another towards Bosila, while the other two connect to Mirpur Road and Tajmahal Road. Because so many roads meet here, the area becomes extremely crowded, especially during the morning and evening rush hours. Workers, office employees, students, and other professionals often spend a long time stuck in traffic. It affects their daily lives, wastes valuable time, and makes travelling to work or study more stressful.

Arrangement without plan

Mohammadpur Bus Stand is only about 10 minutes from my home by rickshaw. I pass through this area twice every day on my way to and from my office. The area is always busy because many people work there. There are markets, roadside hawkers, tea stalls, fruit and cosmetic shops, hotels, restaurants, beauty parlours, and many other small businesses. Because of the large number of people and vehicles, the area becomes very crowded, especially during office hours.

How would you describe the general traffic flow in your region during peak hours? Are there significant differences in traffic between weekdays and weekends?

During peak hours, traffic in my area becomes very heavy and slow-moving. The worst time is usually in the morning when people are going to offices, schools, colleges, and businesses. In the evening, the situation becomes difficult again when everyone starts returning home. Another issue is the footpath & 40% of main road is covered by roadside hawker, which creates an another reason to make heavy traffic.

Grocery market exists on the road

Sometimes, even a short distance can take much longer than usual. Obviously there exists some clear difference between weekend & weekdays. Weekdays are generally much busier because of regular office and school activities. On weekends, the traffic is usually a little lighter, but busy places like markets, bus stands, and shopping areas can still become crowded.

What are the conditions of the main roads in terms of maintenance and signage?

The main roads in my area are generally usable, but some parts need better maintenance. There are places with potholes, uneven surfaces, and damaged roads, which can make travelling difficult, especially during the rainy season. Waterlogging in some areas also makes the situation worse. There are traffic signs and signals in some important places, but they are not always enough to control such heavy traffic. Roadside shops, hawkers, parked vehicles, and buses sometimes block the road and make the signs difficult to notice.

What is the current state of traffic signs and traffic lights in your area?

In my area, there are traffic signs and traffic lights at some important junctions, but their condition is not always good. Some traffic lights do not work properly or are difficult to see because of the crowded surroundings. Traffic signs are also limited in some places, and roadside shops, buses, and parked vehicles can sometimes block them. Some signs are too small, damaged, or partly hidden by trees, shops, and other structures. Road markings are also not very clear in some places, especially where traffic is heavy. During busy hours, traffic police often have to control the traffic manually.

What types of vehicles are most prevalent on the main roads in your region?

The main roads in my area have many different types of vehicles. Buses, CNGs, auto-rickshaws, cycles, cars, motorcycles, and private vehicles are very common. There are also delivery vans and trucks, especially around markets and business areas. Rickshaws and CNGs are used by many local people for short-distance travel, while buses carry a large number of passengers. Because so many different vehicles use the same roads, traffic often becomes slow and crowded, especially during peak hours.

How would you describe the driving culture in your region? Are drivers responsible behind the wheel?

The driving culture in my area is mixed. Some drivers are careful and follow traffic rules, but many do not always follow the rules properly. Overtaking from the wrong side, sudden lane changes, unnecessary honking, and stopping in the middle of the road are quite common. Auto-Rickshaw pullers, CNG drivers, bus drivers, and motorcyclists often compete for space on busy roads. This makes driving more difficult and sometimes unsafe.

Environmental impact

Heavy traffic also has a negative impact on the environment. When vehicles remain stuck on the roads for a long time, they produce more smoke and exhaust gases. This makes the air more polluted and creates health problems for people living and working nearby. The constant sound of horns also creates noise pollution. In busy areas like Mohammadpur, the combination of vehicle smoke, dust, and noise makes the environment uncomfortable.

Traffic jam in late night

Overall, the traffic problem in Mohammadpur has become a part of everyday life. It connects Dhanmondi, Bosila, Mirpur Road, and Tajmahal Road, so many people and vehicles pass through it every day. During peak hours, buses, rickshaws, CNGs, cars, motorcycles, and pedestrians make the roads very crowded. Markets, roadside hawkers, tea stalls, fruit and cosmetic shops, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses also add to the congestion. Buses stopping anywhere, roadside parking, and sudden lane changes make the situation worse.

As a result, office workers, students, shopkeepers, and other people waste a lot of time in traffic. The smoke, dust, and constant honking also make the area unpleasant. Better traffic management, proper parking, clear signs, and stricter traffic rules could help improve the situation.
