All communities always have activities that are indicative of their development, culture, and values. Activities ranging from educational celebrations to cultural festivals and development programs are some of the activities which bring communities together and provide memories. In the last few months, the community of Ikom, in Cross River State, has seen some memorable activities take place which have enhanced community cohesion and development. This article is aimed at discussing some of the activities and its effect on the community.

1 What recent social and/or cultural events have taken place in your community?

The most exciting social event in my community is the graduation ceremony of the Class of 2026 from the Foresight Secondary School. The celebration included the participation of the students, parents, teachers and guests invited for the occasion, with the aim of celebrating the accomplishments of the graduating class. The environment of the ceremony was very decorated, with everyone being excited about the celebration of such an important moment in the lives of the graduates.

The graduation ceremony included various entertaining events which helped keep the audience entertained during the entire period of the celebration. There were debates among the graduates about various issues in which the students expressed their opinions confidently; this is another proof of their knowledge and communication skills acquired in school. Various dance groups presented their dances which were highly praised by the audience and attracted much applause.

The graduation ceremony was an excellent opportunity for enhancing the unity of the community since parents got the opportunity to congratulate their children about their accomplishments, while younger students got an incentive to work hard in order to be successful graduates one day.

2 What cultural initiatives are being promoted by community or government organizations in your area for the coming months?

Among the other cultural events that are being anticipated by most people in my environment in the coming months include the New Yam Festival. This particular festival is celebrated by several communities in Cross River State, and includes Ikom. Apart from just harvesting, the New Yam Festival entails reunion of families, blessing of families by their traditional rulers, performances by various cultural dances as well as meals from the harvested yams. Already, community leaders and cultural associations have initiated a campaign to encourage participation in these activities, and this is meant to revive them.

Beside the New Yam Festival, the local government and various community associations keep on promoting various cultural festivals, youth talents displays, competition on traditional dances and music as well as educating the youth about the history and culture of the various ethnic groups in Cross River State. I like such events because apart from preserving our culture, they attract visitors as well as support the local economy through various means.

3 What challenges are cultural event organizers currently facing in keeping local traditions alive?

The other problem that I have found is that many youth are losing interest in participating in traditional festivals and cultural events since they prefer being part of the modern world which includes social networks and forms of entertainment. As a result, many youth are not eager to learn traditional dance, songs, languages and other cultural elements from the older generations. In case the same process continues, some traditions might be forgotten due to the age of those who know them.

The other challenge related to cultural events is funding. It takes financial resources to organize a cultural event and these include costumes, musical instruments, decorations and other things. There might be cases when poor roads, poor promotion and lack of people at the events make them not successful. I think that additional financial support from governmental organizations, local businesses and people would do much in order to preserve our traditions.

4 What social or grassroots movements are gaining prominence in the streets of your city or region?

Another of the grassroots movements which has become more popular in Ikom is the increased participation of young people in community cleaning and environmental protection movements. At various times, youth organizations and associations carry out community clean-up exercises in order to keep markets, roads and other places clean. There has also been an increase in the number of people who take part in tree planting activities and environmental education, as concerns over the issues of climate change and cleanliness of the community continue.

Another grassroots movement gaining prominence in Ikom is that of youth empowerment through skill acquisition and entrepreneurship. Many churches, community associations and NGOs are organizing skill acquisition workshops on tailoring, information and communication technology, agriculture and entrepreneurship in order to empower youths. I believe that these programs are making a lot of positive impact by encouraging productivity and reducing idleness among youths.

5 Could you mention any recent artistic works or projects in your region that might be of public interest?

Recently, there has been a project in my region that I believe is of great public interest. It is the renovation and expansion of the 245 Battalion Hospital in Ikom. As far as I have seen from the process, the project has become an important improvement for the provision of healthcare services to military personnel and their families. First of all, it consists of renovation of the hospital premises, which creates a more modern atmosphere in which people would receive high-quality medical care. This renovation has become an investment, which shows the concern about health of those who serve the country.

Moreover, one should note that the project is characterized by the high level of equipment and professional approach to healthcare. The hospital is renovated with the purpose to improve the facilities and provide people with adequate healthcare services. In addition, healthcare workers are highly qualified to give proper healthcare. I believe that this renovation will be beneficial not only for military personnel but for improvement of healthcare provision in the region in general.

From what I saw, the graduation ceremony was a great success because of the way it positively affected both the students and the rest of the community. This ceremony offered the graduating students a chance to express themselves, whether through the reception of the certificates, the participation in debate forums, cultural shows or dances.

What I would also like to appreciate is the effort made by the management of Foresight Secondary School in organizing such an event. It was very impressive the way things were done, how the events and performances were coordinated so that the day was enjoyed by all those who came to celebrate. A lot of effort must have been invested in the preparation of the program, and the outcome was great since the graduation ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of the students while motivating others to work towards achieving the same.
