Today, I would like to share with you the life struggles of the unsung heroes behind the housing and infrastructure sector in my area—the daily wage laborers who haul construction materials from "Mr. Saidul Enterprises" on Manikadi Bazar Road—and the reality of our region's economy.

Field Report and Visit Details (Field Report)

The wheels of development and building beautiful houses in our area revolve around these people. Every day, day laborers gather at the Ms. Saidul Enterprise point on Manikdi Bazar Road early in the morning. From there, they collect bricks, sand, cement, and rods; load them into vans with their own physical strength; and deliver them to various under-construction projects.

• Distance and transportation: The place is very close to my house, just a 1-minute walk away. I went there on foot.

• Visit time: I reached the spot at 9:30 am and spent some time with them till 10:45 am.

• Work schedule: They work continuously from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm (Their lunch and rest break is from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm).

It seems to me that we are fascinated by the big buildings, but we forget the people who drag these bricks and sand with blood and sweat. Standing on the spot, I saw with my own eyes—they were loading heavy bricks into vans in the scorching sun and dragging them with great effort. Again, after work, they are sitting in rows in front of the shutters of closed shops on the road to take a breath. In my opinion, these ordinary daily wage earners are the real driving force of our local economy.

• Advantages: With institutions like 'Ms. Saidul Enterprises', the workers get some work every day and get their cash wages at the end of the day.

• Disadvantages: They suffer from long-term physical hardship due to loading and unloading heavy bricks and sand with their bare hands and carrying cement bags on their shoulders. I did not see any of them wearing gloves or helmets. Moreover, when it rains, work stops, and they have to worry about heating the pots on the stove that day.

1. What are the main economic sectors in your region currently?

I think that currently, three main economic sectors are the most active in our Manikadi region:

• Real Estate & Construction: New buildings and housing are being built in our area all the time. Institutions like 'Ms. Saidul Enterprise' and the wages of the workers associated with it have kept the local cash flow flowing.

• Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): General grocery stores, mobile services, hardware shops, and tea stalls along Manikadi Bazar Road.

• Transportation and Logistics: Construction materials and goods are exchanged through hand-operated vans, pedal trolleys, and small trucks.

2. How would you describe the relationship between average income and expenses in your community? Tell us about basic goods and services.

It seems to me that there is a deep disparity between the daily income of a daily wage earner in our community and the cost of living.

• Income and Expenditure: A worker gets BDT 700 to 900 (which 154 -199 STEEM) a day by pulling goods from Mr. Saidul Enterprise. But with the increasing market prices of rice, pulses, and oil, the entire income ends up being spent on food to feed the family.

• Basic Needs: While they struggle to get food, sending their children to a good school or saving money for medical treatment is like a dream for them. In my opinion, their standard of living is very pitiful compared to the hard work they do.

3. Are there education and job training programs available? How do they influence regional productivity?

---

There are some government and private technical training centers in our area, where work is taught in various trades.

• Positive impact of training: These centers teach young people skills like electrical work, drilling, or welding, which are useful in the regional economy.

• Reality of daily wage laborers: However, in my opinion, a big deficiency is that these daily wage laborers do not have any training on hygiene, modern heavy goods transportation, or work safety. If they had been given a basic idea of ​​occupational safety, the work would have been safer and faster.

4. Are there any infrastructure projects that could change the economic landscape in the near future?

Yes, work is underway to modernize our Manikdi Bazar Road and drainage system.

• Economic change: The improvement in the transportation system after the completion of this road will enable Ms. Saidul Enterprise to easily transport large consignments of bricks and sand.

• New possibilities: If the roads and environment improve, the construction of new multi-story buildings will increase further, which I believe will further increase the livelihood opportunities of these daily wage laborers.

5. If a foreigner were to come looking for a job in your region, what would you recommend? In which sector and area could they find employment immediately?

If any new person or foreigner comes to our area for work, I would advise him to contact construction material suppliers and loading-unloading spots like Ms. Saidul Enterprise on Manikdi Bazar Road.

Reason for getting immediate work: According to my experience, this job does not require any institutional degree or previous experience. Just come to this spot in the morning with honesty and a mindset of physical labor, and you are guaranteed to get work on a daily basis.

Environmental Impact:

I have personally observed that piles of bricks and sand are kept openly next to Manikdi Bazar Road. Whenever there is wind, the powdery sand and dust particles fly into the air, which causes a lot of damage to the lungs of pedestrians and these laborers. In my opinion, it should be made mandatory to cover them with tarpaulin.

It seems to me that behind every brick and cement sack, there is a family's dream and struggle for survival. Without their hard work, no development of our city is possible. Therefore, it is our moral responsibility to ensure fair wages, respect, and workplace safety for these workers.
