The iPhone 18 Pro Max feels like Apple has finally decided to give its biggest iPhone some meaningful upgrades instead of only making small yearly improvements. The design is still very familiar, but #Apple has improved the camera system, performance, battery life and even the Dynamic Island. It is not a completely different iPhone, but this generation feels more complete.

The #iPhone 18 Pro Max comes with a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz. The screen is still one of the best parts of the phone, with very high brightness, excellent colours and deep blacks. Apple has also added an anti-reflective coating, which should make outdoor use easier. The Dynamic Island is now smaller and can show more information at once, so it feels less distracting than before.

The design follows the same basic iPhone Pro look, but Apple has moved to an aluminium unibody design with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. The new Burgundy colour gives the phone a more noticeable look, while Black, Silver and Glacier are available for people who want something more traditional. At 249g, this is still a very heavy phone, so people who prefer lighter phones will definitely feel the size.

Performance is one of the biggest upgrades. The iPhone 18 Pro Max uses Apple's new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm process, with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and Neural Accelerators. Apple also added a new-generation vapour chamber to improve sustained performance. This should make the phone extremely fast not only for normal use but also for gaming, video editing and other heavy tasks. Apple says sustained performance can be up to 40% faster than the previous generation.

But the biggest change this year is probably the camera. Apple has finally added a variable aperture to the main 48MP Fusion camera, something Android phones have offered for some time. The aperture can move between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. This gives the camera more control over low-light photography, depth of field and keeping more people in focus in group photos. Apple says the wider f/1.48 aperture can improve low-light performance by around 50 percent.

The other cameras are also 48MP. There is a 48MP ultrawide camera for landscapes and macro shots, while the 48MP telephoto camera provides 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. This gives the iPhone 18 Pro Max a much more flexible camera system than before. It is especially interesting for people who take a lot of photos while travelling, because you can move from ultrawide to normal shots and then to long-distance subjects without depending too much on digital zoom.

Video is still another major strength of the iPhone. Apple has added more Pro controls, better focus tracking and new video features, while the phone continues to support professional formats such as ProRes and ProRAW. The new Center Stage front camera also makes selfies and video calls more flexible because it can keep people properly framed even when the phone orientation changes.

Battery life is another area where the Pro Max finally feels different. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max can provide up to 30 hours of typical use and up to 45 hours of video playback. Charging has also improved, with up to 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes using a 60W-capable adapter or higher. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging can reach 25W.

The software is #iOS 27, with the new generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Apple is pushing AI deeper into the system, including more personal and conversational Siri features and AI-powered editing tools. Of course, how useful these features are will depend on how much you actually use AI on your phone, but Apple is clearly trying to make AI a bigger part of the iPhone experience.

There are still a few drawbacks:

• The 249g weight makes the phone quite heavy for everyday one-hand use.
• The design is still very similar to the previous Pro Max.
• The phone is expensive, starting at $1,299 for 256GB.
• Apple still keeps some of its best features inside the Pro models.
• The huge 6.9-inch display and large body will not be comfortable for everyone.
• Many of the new camera controls will mainly interest serious photographers and creators.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, which is $100 more than the previous generation. That makes the price harder to ignore, especially when many Android flagships now offer very powerful hardware, fast charging and large batteries for less money.

Still, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is probably the most complete iPhone Apple has made. The A20 Pro gives it serious performance, the camera system is much more flexible, battery life has taken a big step forward and the display remains excellent. The variable aperture is also a real camera upgrade rather than just another megapixel number.

For someone already using an iPhone 17 Pro Max, the upgrade is not absolutely necessary unless you care about the camera, battery life or maximum performance. But for older iPhone users, especially people coming from an iPhone 15 Pro Max or earlier, the iPhone 18 Pro Max makes a much stronger case. It is still big, heavy and expensive, but this time Apple has given the Pro Max enough improvements to make it feel like a proper new generation.
